We are reading the narrative text from Unit 1 titled, "The Medicine Bag." You want to support students' comprehension of the text throughout the reading through querying, but you also do not want to interrupt their reading too often that it disrupts and fluency and stifles enjoyment of the first read. The class period is 55 minutes in length. Prior to starting the first read there will be an introduction to concept vocabulary words that students will encounter throughout the text. These words include wearily, straggled, rumpled, fatigue, frail, and sheepishly. The first word students will encounter is wearily. Prior to reading the text we will also read the "About the Author" that introduces Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve's goal of portraying American Indians realistically. Students will also be prompted to focus on the reading strategy of making connection while reading by looking for relationships between ideas in a text and the world around them. What is the fist point in the text where a question would help ensure that a key point isn't missed by students? What questions might you ask? It would be great if the stopping point could be connected to any of the three prereading activities in context.
