Bowling for Columbine is a documentary that effectively delves into the issue of gun violence in the United States through a mix of interviews, historical and geographical context, satirical elements, and an analysis of entertainment consumption. It was interesting to observe how these components created multiple layers that often shifted the focus and prompted new questions. The title, Bowling for Columbine, is somewhat misleading. While the central theme revolves around gun violence in the U.S., the documentary frequently broadens its perspective. Although these tangents are often relevant, they occasionally felt distracting or overwhelming, making it challenging to remain fully engaged with the main subject.

It has a non-linear structure that is enriched by the cultural references such as the songs and the cartoon segment that shows the director's intent to link various factors contributing to gun violence in the U.S.

Given the circumstances under which this documentary was made, it successfully crafted a narrative using the existing content left behind by Treadwell. The creation of this documentary serves as a middle ground for Herzog, the director, and Treadwell, allowing them to connect despite the director's apparent desire to insert his own opinions into the story. Although Herzog seems to try to avoid overstepping his role and respect the boundaries of those involved, his presence is still felt through the circumstances he creates to reflect on Treadwell’s life. I found myself thinking that the documentary had a slow pace, but it ultimately offers a captivating exploration of one man’s vision and the inevitable consequences of pushing the limits of that vision, particularly in relation to the natural world and our place within it.

The documentary blends expository, reflexive, and performative modes, alternating between Treadwell’s footage and interviews with people close to him and experts. The contrast between Treadwell’s perspective and the external viewpoints serves to question his actions. As well Herzog’s voiceover narration guides us through the story that he wanted to create. While Treadwell presents himself as a protector of the bears, Herzog uses the narrative to guide the viewer’s understanding. One example of this is Herzog’s way to deal with the tape containing the audio of Treadwell’s death, and how he choreographs moments to elicit what appear to be genuine reactions, such as the scene where the mortician gives Treadwell’s ex-girlfriend his watch.
