Funding from the Public Works Administration made this possible. The reasoning behind building it was to provide "flood control, to provide irrigation water and to produce hydroelectric power. The dam is also providing water to irrigate farm fields. In addition it " supplies water and power to Los Angeles and other rapidly growing cities in the Southwest" (nps.gov).
