However, her mother questions why she would want to go there when they have everything they need in the place where they live. This shows how the two generations differ as one seeks adventure while the other one wants a peaceful and simple life.

When the canadian border patrol lady is told this she says that she would be proud too if she was blackfoot, but that she has to pick American or Canadian. The mother doesn't budge and remains prideful about her identity.

Even after all the police officers she encounter, she had humility and didn't change her answer. The mother stood her ground and humbled the police officers by her determination and resilience in the situation.

In a way this is his humility. "It would have been easier if my mother had just said 'Canadian' and been done with it, but I could see she wasn't going to do that." ( King 135). The main character's indifference towards his Blackfoot heritage shows his humility because he doesn't care if he was called Canadian.

The author wrote,"Then we got back in the car and drove to the Canadian border, which was only about a hundred yards away" (King 137). The mother continues to express a theme of pride by not conforming to these new societal norms where she must fit into a box. They do not allow for outliers or for the people who are native to the land that is governed by Americans and Canadians to be who they are.
