  • In the context of the poem, what does it mean to feel alone? How is the bird affected by its isolation in the cage? What is the bird denied by being kept in the cage? You feel trapped which is what is represented by the Cage. The bird is lonely and only wants to be released ¨I know why the caged bird beats his wing Till its blood is red on the cruel bars¨. The bird is denied its freedom that he desires.
  • How does this relate to the Count of Monte Cristo? (Keep in mind that this bird is still caged after slavery was abolished) When locked away for so long just like Edmond was you begin to want freedom more than anything and long to not be lonely anymore.
