         <description><![CDATA[<p>      Sheng's literal meaning in English is scholar.</p><p>      There is three types of Shengs: Laosheng, which means 'old sheng', Xiaosheng, which means 'young sheng' and Wusheng which means 'martial sheng'.</p><p>     The Laosheng is a dignified older role, usually distinguished by a long, thin, three-part beard. They typically wear long robes with water sleeves, high-soled boots, and fabric headdresses.</p><p>       The Xiaosheng are normally beardless as they are young. They wear paler makeup than Laosheng as they want to appear younger. They are often with beautiful with young women due to their handsomeness and how young they look.</p><p>      The Wusheng is a martial arts character that trains acrobatics and have a natural voice when singing.</p><p>      All the shengs have subcategories. e.g. Wusheng's subcategories are changkao and duanda.</p>]]></description>

In the past the Chinese Opera, including the Dan roles, were played by males. The laosheng is a dignified older role.</p><p><br></p><p>These characters have a gentle and cultivated disposition and wear sensible costumes.</p><p><br></p><p> One type of <em>laosheng</em> role is the <em>hongsheng</em>, a red-faced older male. The only two <em>hongsheng</em> roles are Guan Gong,the Chinese God of war and Zhao Kuang-yin the first Song Dynasty emperor.</p>]]></description>
