A Chou (丑) plays the role of a clown in a Chinese Opera, & entertains the crowd with his comical antics. His make-up includes a white patch across the nose bridge & eyes, and thick busy eye brows to exaggerate comical expressions.

-Xiaosheng was a younger gentlemen then Laosheng and it's beardless.

-They wear paler makeup than laosheng characters to show their youth.

The Qing Yi represents virtuous and elite women. The Hua dan represents young, unmarried women, the Wu dan represents female warriors or maidens skilled in fighting. Lao dan represents old women , like playing the role of a grandmother. The da mao dan represents a female warrior.

Although these roles are a girl , it is often played by men.

There is three types of Shengs: Laosheng, which means 'old sheng', Xiaosheng, which means 'young sheng' and Wusheng which means 'martial sheng'.

The Wusheng is a martial arts character that trains acrobatics and have a natural voice when singing.

All the shengs have subcategories. e.g. Wusheng's subcategories are changkao and duanda.

These characters have a gentle and cultivated disposition and wear sensible costumes.

One type of laosheng role is the hongsheng, a red-faced older male. The only two hongsheng roles are Guan Gong,the Chinese God of war and Zhao Kuang-yin the first Song Dynasty emperor.
