Top speed is nice for bragging rights, but most of the time even a fire-breathing raceboat is throttled back. We'd opt for a heavier, more comfortable boat.

-Slim Shady

Boats float by a force called buoyancy, which works when the ship displaces more mass of water than its own weight. So if the ship weighs more than the amount of water it displaces it will sink, and if a ship displaces way too much water compared to its weight it will stay too high and sink.
