Even though slavery was abolished after the Civil War, African Americans were still struggling to make a living. African Americans wanted to make a name for themselves and the way they did that was creating the Harlem Renaissance. The Harlem Renaissance was a 1917 theater production called "Three Plays for a Negro Theater" and even though the poem never addressed race directly, African Americans felt its message. They both also use a good amount of figurative language to get the message to the reader across.

One difference in the poems is in "Dreams" the author was talking more directly to a single person while "America" is talking about a group of people as a whole.
