Many strange hats can be found in this place. Some are made out of pasta, out of straw, out of boxes, out of dice and many other materials. When we visited the museum, on the 15th of May, a gentleman explained to us the history of straw hats and how they were made in Montappone. Finally we went to a theater where some ladies showed us how straw braids were made and read us a poem in dialect.

In this exhibition there are hats of all shapes and colors, scattered all over the pedestals. The hat that I liked the most is called “Mac Cap McHut”, created by Sorbatti. It is shaped like a hamburger, the part of the bread is made of fabric and is covered with glitter, instead, the meat, the cheese, the tomato and salad are simply made of cloth.

In this museum there are straw hats, machines with which they were made and photos showing how straw was woven. There are traditional hats that are all the rage, for everyday use and for ceremonies, all born from a simple stem of straw.

The hat museum in Montappone was founded in 1991 and constitutes the only historical and cultural memory of the ancient straw manufacturing in the city documented as early as the eighteenth century.

The stages of processing are: from harvesting to selection, from weaving to sewing, up to the decoration and sale of the hat.

With straw, people made not only hats, but also bags, accessories, belts, shoes, centerpieces and straws.

There were irons to model and create the desired shapes.

First we visited a small room with a lot of straw hats , for men and women. We  also saw straw braids, made by braiders, old machines, old tools and documents that explained their use. The tour guide told us how citizens of Montappone started to make hats up to the present day. The tradition of weaving straw was born in the 18th century when the first factories were born.
Then we visited another room where there were hats for the exhibition: the most interesting and particular ones win a prize. It's a special collection of hats, manufactured and decorated with recycled materials, such as glass, paper, leather, ceramic, stone, pasta, wood and metal. They are designed by famous Marche names and they form a very unusual and creative collection.
Finally,  we met the braiders in a small theatre. They showed us how to make hats and weave straw.
