Giovanni Boccaccio was born in 1313 in Certaldo, Italy. He was the son of a very wealthy merchant Boccaccino di Chellino, and a woman of unknown identity. His father later married another woman, and Boccaccio was raised in Florence. Giovanni's life started out with difficulties due to poverty. Boccaccio attended school in Florence and was taken into work at the age of 10. Giovanni had a strong passion for literary arts, however, his dad had no sympathy for it. His father sent Boccaccio to Naples in 1327 to study business and law. His time in Naples was hard for him, as it started to introduce him to the cultural and academic life of the city.

The Decameron had the style of Italian classical prose, this heavily impacted the arts of the Renaissance. The Decameron illustrates 10 young people (7 women, 3 men) they are in the wealthy countryside after fleeing due to the black plague. The story is based upon the ten days of fortnight with everyone saying a story per day to pass time. The stories added amount up to a 100 in all. Boccacio merged narrative and interconnected stories.
