PledgeMusic is an online direct to fan music platform, launched in August 2009, that facilitates musicians reaching out to their fanbase (termed Pledgers) to pre-sell, market, and distribute music projects including recordings, music videos, and concerts. For example a band I like called “While She Sleeps” used pledge music to fund there new album You Are We. They got fans to purchase the album before they recorded it and used that money to build their own studio to cut down on studio costs for the future and recorded their album that way. Their Guitar player Matt Walsh had knowledge in producing and mixing an album so they did the whole marketing, merchandise , recording of the album by themselves to save money.

February this year I attended the output festival in Belfast where my friend Phil and I where talking to John Sanderson who is the head of A&R Nottingham music. Phil is a hip/hop artist and John gave Phil the opportunity to write a track for Dizzie Rascal after talking to Phil. Phil and I where able to create some samples to send on to John for Dizzie. This is a perfect example of not necessarily needing a "manger" and how approaching people for opportunities at theses events can really help artists make connections.

Artists can start to market themselves online now. I understood I needed to market myself and get myself out there so I decided to start my own music page on Facebook called Decky Mcdaid-Music around February time. I posted a few covers to show what I could play then wrote I would be available to take guitar lessons now, a few days later a girl I work with messaged me looking to teach her son- I had my first student. I then put a few clips together of myself playing and had my first video advertisement on Facebook I promoted this video and it got around 3.7k views, a lot of my fellow musicians/friends also shared the post attracting more likes and views to my Facebook page, by the time this ad had finished running I had 6 students.I decided to advertise myself through advertisements of myself playing, as ive never seen a teacher do this before. I thought if I put a clip up of myself playing this may motivate other kids/adults to play especially if they like rock/metal music as a lot of teachers don’t focus on that aspect of playing and aim towards more acoustic playing. I then had different mediums for customers to contact me on including messenger which is the most effective and my phone (oddly enough I only booked 3 students through that).

Around 2 weeks later I then put up another guitar teacher advertisement this time I approached it differently when promoting it to people on Facebook, I went in and changed the segment of people who the old advert targeted before and changed it to target more people (potential students) based on there likes, I picked the most popular tv shows/celebs like Kim Kardashin and love Islands as they are relevant so its more likely people has liked these on Facebook-My hypothesis was correct and my target audience for the ad I was about to run went from a potential of 7000 to 69000. Within a week I had to take down my ad as I had 17 students and now a waiting list. I then attended a google (digital garage) talk on 25/4/18 in SRC Armagh. They more or less confirmed what i was saying and explained to us how to promote ourselves online. One thing that I did pick up on is how we even record our videos will decide how much room onscreen we take up while scrolling through Facebook-These finer details really helps give the musician a better fighting chance when trying to get noticed especially considering Facebook shows business pages less now on news feeds and will focus more on family/friends.

Because of you tube and television series like the X-Factor it is pretty easy to get noticed know. A guy in his bedroom can become an overnight success if his song becomes viral or perhaps can get noticed by a manager looking on the internet for clients. Many artists today have started out like this for example Justin Bieber. In an interview about this Justin said "It had a hundred views, then a thousand views, then ten thousand views, so I just kept posting more videos and more videos," Justin, now 15, says in a soft voice. "Eventually, I got found by my manager who flew me to Atlanta to meet Usher." Although this is a good way to get noticed it does come with negatives. A lot of people can criticize over the internet typically known as "keyboard warriors". This can add a lot of pressure to artists and stress. A lot of artists recently have committed suicide for example, Chester Bennington (Linkin Park) died July 20th 2017. Linkin parks recent album had got a lot of negative feedback online that they released a couple of moths prior to his death. This could have possibly lead to his depression which caused him to do what he did. The internet can be harmful as well as useful.
