During this segment, Stella objects to Jeff's spying on the neighbours, labelling his actions as "trouble". However, the characters ultimately believe that the ends justify the means, and engage in this voyeuristic behaviour despite their awareness of its immorality. This may be suggestive of the human inclination to rationalise their seemingly unethical actions, and thus allow their self-interest to become a sense of righteousness even when they transgress the rights of others.

Ironically, this is exactly what Jeff is doing, as he watches Thorwald; while Thorwald is afraid of being observed, Jeff is likewise avoiding being discovered by Thorwald, as exemplified by his almost instinctive decision to recede into the darkness. This reflects Jeff's inner conscience, as he is fully aware that his actions are, to a great extent, immoral.

The dog digging represents the curiosity found in Jeff and the potential extents he may have gone to if he were able to move and properly investigate. The woman/owner in the red dress represents the voice of reason in Stella to Jeff, calling him away from danger and warning him to be cautious around Mr Thorwald. The eventual end of the dog while digging around represents the potential troubles that Jeff may encounter if he gets too deeply entrenched in solving the case.
