Writing out questions during planning and decide what answers we are looking for the students to provide.
Provide co-teaching with questioning opportunities.
Allow teachers to observe other teachers who are skilled at asking deep explanatory questions.

On our campus, we implement several AVID strategies that includes level of questions and building RIGOR into instruction.

Using planning to explicitly plan the types of questions that need to be asked.

Have teachers practice coming up with their own answers to help them identify misconceptions that students may have. This will help teachers be able to model and guide students to give the types of responses that we are looking for with evidence and support.

Providing sentence stems, iReady discourse cards, and scaffolded questioning to support student learning.

We currenlty are focused on building background and content knowledge which will help in acquistion of knowledge (VELCRO!) and being able to aske and answer questions.

We can amplify this by ...wait for it... PLANNING for what students may lack in knwoeldge and plannign for how we can be intnetional about front loading some of that knowledge. Contining to connect with our students and planning for ways to connect to what interests them will help them engage in deep conversationa dn asking meaningful questions.

Giving opportunities for students to present more extended responses, both in speaking and in writing, to open ended questions. Using planning time to select open ended questions from the curriculum and the benchmark cards as well as helping teachers to allot the appropriate amount of time for them to complete these tasks. Structuring speaking tasks through routines such as Think-Pair-Shares can also be helpful toward this recommendation.

I think it is easy to forget about the importance of modeling Think Alouds. This is a skill that needs to be explicitly taught and modeled to be done effectively.

I like the idea of having teachers collaborate and observe a lesson with a teacher who is asking the deep questioning.

Using the stuctures that are present currently to help teachers focus on the background and content knowledge, next steps would be to utlizing planning to determine:

what students bring that will enhance knowledge acquisition
What knowlegde students don't have that they will need to have to engae in deep conversations
TEACHER explicit models of the quesiton and answere process with guided practice opportuties for immediate implementation and chance for students to recieve FEEDBACK on their discourse
student experiences or interests that would connect to the learning necessar for the deep conversations
MAKING SPACE FOR RICH CONVERSATION in the literacy block
As follow ups, coaching cycles to ensure that implementation reflects planning
