I arrived quite early on the day of reporting because I mistakenly looked at the letter given by JPN where I was supposed to report at 8 am. As soon as I arrived at the school, I met with GPK1 due to the absence of the Principal at that time. Encik Khairuddin or better known as Cikgu Khai asked me a few questions before finally directing me to the teacher's room to give me a desk. After that, I was met by Puan Shikin who is the Head of the English Language Committee at SMKM for the purpose of giving classes and schedules. Teacher Shikin suggested that I take the Form 1 and Form 4 classes because she thought I would gain more knowledge if I took one upper secondary and one lower secondary class. Long story short, I met my mentor Mrs Nazeeda who is the English subject teacher for 4 Gamma, which is the third class out of five, form 4 classes. The form 4 class, is the class that has been selected as the class that I will use for the observation session in the future. Apart from the Form 4 class, I was also given the form 1 Beta class which is the second class out of five classes. The next day, guided by the map in the school calendar book that was given to me, I walked around the school grounds to familiarize myself with the ins and outs of the school. The next day, I met with GPKKoko to resolve co-curricular matters such as the Uniformed Unit, Games and Clubs. I was given School Junior Cadets, Netball Games and Art & Culture Club. Finally, on Friday, I followed my mentor to enter the 4 Gamma class for a familiarization session with the students and to see how Teacher Nazeeda teaches in class. This week, I taught the advantages and disadvantages of laptops and desktop computers to 4 Gamma students. It is a textbook-based lesson. During the learning session, I found that 4 Gamma students are students who have a very low proficiency level. Since the skill I'm using for the class is speaking, I'm honestly a bit nervous about teaching them. Overall they were asked to state the pros and cons of laptops and desktop computers. Since they are high school students, I discuss together the pros and cons of laptops with my students. By using the table, they successfully discussed the pros and cons of laptops and desktop computers with my help. Although the challenge is to encourage them to present ideas, but there are a few students who try to give their answers despite their limited language vocabulary abilities. Another challenge for me is when trying to explain what the meaning of the words. But as for my form 1 class, I was advised by their previous English teacher that usually they will do a revision on past years' exam papers. Thus why, I did the past years’ examination papers with them. However, I focused more on essays for paper 2 and error identification for paper 1. This is because I was told that these two parts are not included in the previous exam which means they are still not familiar with the format. For essay revision, I taught them to make an essay plan in order to help them with their writing afterwards. In class, I show an example of how to apply the writing based on the plan that they made earlier. I choose Unit 3: Buy it! With questionnaire language as my focus or target for today. During the set induction, I played ‘’hangman’’ as a way to slowly exposed the vocabulary that related to the questionnaires. Once the small activity is done, I highlight that all these vocabulary can be found in a questionnaire then only I show the actual example of a questionnaire that I draw on the mahjong paper earlier to save time. In my opinion, I can see that playing games that they are familiar with during the set induction are good as it keeps them awake and participating. In my teaching part, I gave them a lot of examples in order for them to get an idea of how to complete a form. When I moved on to the class activity, dividing them into groups that they are comfortable with helped them to engage well as they are not shy around their clique. The reason I said this is because I realised that some of the usually passive students are the one who leads their team. Thus why I let them decide on their own teammates. As for class exercises, as usual, I only prepared 1 worksheet due to time constraints and the proficiency of my students. During the recapitulations, I was in awe as my students are able to state all the meanings of the vocabulary as well as the items or format found in a questionnaire. I conclude my lesson with a moral value that they can relate to in their daily life. All in all, when I received my marks from my mentor, I was so happy with the marks. I’m glad that my mentor is on the same page as me with my lesson. On Monday, I asked for an early leave because I caught a cold during the weekends. Unfortunately for me, I went to see the doctor and got myself a 2-days MCs. However, on Thursday and Friday, I was able to enter the class as usual. I only have classes with 4 Gamma on both days. As they were just finished with their examination the previous week. In both classes with them, I was told by my mentor to discuss the exams question with the students. On Thursday I focuses more on Paper 2 which we were able to discuss the E-mail question in Part A. During the class, I asked them to highlight all of the keywords in the questions. I also once again remind them in class that it is okay to highlight the keywords or sketch something on their exam question paper if it will help them with their writing. For example, an essay plan that I already taught them in previous classes. Thus, with the teacher’s guidance, the class was able to finish the discussion and writing of exam paper 2 part A. Despite that, I still saw a few students who are still very passive in terms of sharing their ideas. On the next day, we moved on to the discussion for Part C where they need to choose 1 question among the three questions provided. In their exam paper, I found out that, majority of them choose the review question however, after reading and marking their paper, instead of a review it feels more like a story. Due to that matter, I consulted with my mentor to review back the marks that I have given them. My mentor said that this kind of answer is to be expected from the students of SMKM, especially from 2nd classes and below, due to their low proficiency level. That is why my mentor told me it is okay to be a little lenient when marking their paper. Even though it is a recorded class, I was so nervous about how well my students will behave with a camera behind them. Luckily, they were able to follow my lesson quite well. I held the class in the computer lab because I’m concerned about the loud noises that might be caught in the video as I only use my phone to record my class. The skill that was used during the lesson was reading. As far as I remember, some of my students still have trouble pronouncing words whether it is a basic or bombastic word. However, since I always randomly choose them to read whenever long texts are involved in our previous lesson, I can see the improvement in their skill. Thus, the recorded lesson was successfully conducted. On top of that, I realised that my method of asking them to make a small note on their paper whether highlighting points or keywords seems to be working because they are now not afraid to sketch on their paper. I was actually very nervous because, on the day of the observation, I was told that a lot of students won’t be in the class as they were participating in a BM project. Most of the students in the class during the observation were low-proficiency students. However, I think they did really well. During the class activity, I was actually contemplating whether to put a timer or not because I consulted with another English teacher here that it might be good to not pressure the students, especially the low proficiency students. However, I decided to include it because I saw that most of the students in my class are very excited whenever they win because they like the rewards I gave.
