Henri Fayol was a French industrialist who devoloped the Administrative Management Theory. Fayol was the managing director of a mining firm and a very successful businessman. "Fayol's lifetime was characterized as one of change in France: the separation of church and state in education..." (Wren 1995). Henri looked at management from the top down view, and concentrated on the entirety of organizational management
(Owings & Kaplan, 2012).

It is stated that some dysfunctions to the Administrative Theory can exist. Some dysfunctions stated are: impersonality due to the atmosphere it may produce, limiting communication among employees, and producing an atmosphere where people feel invisible.
(Owings & Kaplan, 2012)

With the successes that Fayol had, Breeze suggests that the company survived due to the technical and financial actions that Fayol took, not from the administrative procedures and policies.
(Breeze, 1985, p. 46)

Jean Chevalier stated that it wasn't Fayol's administrative management theory that restored profitability. It was actually the rise of the market.
(Wren, 2001)

The Administrative Management Theory focused on the structure of the organization's leadership, and organized the tasks for the leaders and managers of the organization.

Fayol's view of administration focused on the administrators and managers, not the structure of the company. He felt planning and flexibility were essential to administration. The management aspect of the job was a major role, however the strategies needed to be flexible for unexpected change. He also recognized that management was a continuous process due to constant changes.
(Owings & Kaplan, 2012)
