The community that the teens in her program came from was fairly poor, and tended not to get great services for taking care of the community. She and her colleagues challenged the students to take responsibility for and pride in their community. 

The first project that the teens did came from their realization that older people, and people with trouble walking, were having a really hard time getting around because there were no railings, or the railings had fallen into disrepair. The teens realized that they could make the repairs and put up new railings cheaply. They sought some start up money for supplies, and started to fix the problem. 

When I met their teacher, the program had been going and growing for several years. The community was being positively impacted by the teens taking an active role in making things better. They were getting ready to tackle food security, and one plan that their teacher wanted to take back was growing native edible plants that would benefit native species, and were part of more traditional food ways instead of using  imported food plants. She hoped in that way to help the youth in the community connect with fading elements of their culture while empowering them to help care for the people in the community.
