Before COVID, the class periods were 60 min, along with the 8 class periods. Now, the class periods are shortened to 4, and 20 extra minutes are added to each period. This was a bad approach as schools are already receiving complaints from the students about the periods being too excessive. Teachers have had to schedule breaks in between class time to make sure their students stay alert. The 80 min periods also apply for online school, which is both unhealthy and excessive for students. Students spend over 5 hours a day staring at a screen for online learning. The Issue: The Lisle High School start time in a normal year is 7:50 am. This is too early for many students when considering the fact that teens normally don't go to sleep until late at night because of other responsibilities such as homework or sports. In order to properly function, the recommended amount of sleep for an adolescent is 8-10 hours each night which cannot be accomplished because of various reasons, plus needing to be in class so early. Not having proper sleep causes the student to not perform at their best.

The issue is that students are spending way too much time looking at a screen. Students of Lisle high school already spend 320 minutes a day looking at a screen for class. That's not including the time student spend looking at their screen for homework. This is going over the limit of screen time. The limit for most kids is 2 hours. The limit gets reached just from online school. Having kids stare at a screen all day can affect their physical health and mental health. With some college teams generating over 100 million dollars in revenue it is hard to see why they are not getting paid like any other job. This is a federal issue as it pertains to multiple states with colleges that generate a lot of revenue. If they cannot make money off of the sport they play they should be able to use their fame to get their money.
