The flag of Alaska has a blue background that symbolizes both the sky and the forget-me-not, the state's symbolic flower. The North Star is drawn in the upper corner of the door, representing the future of the state, the northernmost of the USA (in English the North Star is in fact also called the North Star). The smaller stars at the bottom represent the Big Dipper, of the Ursa Major constellation, and are a symbol of strength.

The current flag was chosen in 1927 from among the 142 proposals put forward and is the work of a thirteen-year-old student, Benny Benson.
