         <title>What is Copyright?</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>A <em>copyright is a type of intellectual property. A copyright protects original works of authorship as soon as author fixes the work in a tangible form. This prevents the work from being used by others without permission.<br><br></em>Examples of copyrighted works include literary articles, software, pictures, graphics, sculptures, architectural design, sound recordings, lyrics, audiovisual works, poems, plays, pantomimes, choreography and more.&nbsp;<br><br>Assume every work is fully copyrighted.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><em>Fair use is the limited ability to use copyrighted work under certain conditions without permission.<br><br></em>Considerations for fair use include the nature of use, the type of work, the amount used, and the commercial impact.&nbsp;<br><br>A teacher in an educational setting does not have a free pass to ignore copyright laws.<br><br>Ask yourself these four questions:</div><ul><li>Is the use transformative? Yes=Fair Use</li><li>Is the work factual in nature? Yes=Fair Use</li><li>Is the amount of use minimal? Yes=Fair Use</li><li>Does the use negatively impact the copyright holder's ability to profit from the work? No=Fair Use</li></ul>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><em>Creative Commons are licenses that grant permission to use a work under copyright law</em>.&nbsp;<br><br>Creative Commons are not an alternative to copyright; they work alongside copyright and enable the creators of the work to modify copyright terms to best suit their needs. &nbsp;<br><br>Pay attention to the details and restrictions of the Creative Commons status, for example whether or not a work can be adapted or must remain unchanged.&nbsp;<br><br>Always remember to credit the source.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li>Teachers can always create their own content to use freely!</li><li>Teachers can use copyrighted content to present information to students in-person for educational purposes&nbsp;</li><li>Teachers can share a link with students instead of downloading content (links are legal)</li><li>Teachers can use Public Domain materials (<em>public domain materials are not protected by intellectual property laws and are always free to use)</em></li><li>Teachers can use Creative Commons materials (remember to use according to the permissions and always credit the owner)</li><li>Teachers can use information from U.S. Government websites</li><li>Teachers can use the Google "Tools" button to filter image search results by selecting "Creative Commons Licenses"</li><li>Teachers can share materials with students in a password protected site with limited exposure instead of on a public or personal website</li><li>And teachers can always ask for permission!
