I wonder thro' each chater'd street

Near where the charter'd Thames does flow

And mark in every face I meet,
Marks of weakness, marks of woe.

In every cry of every man,
In every infant's cry of fear,
In every voice, in every ban,
The mind-forg'd manacles I hear

How the Chimney-sweeper's cry
Every blackening Church appalls,
And the hapless Soldier's sigh
Runs in blood down Palace walls.

How the youthful Harlot's curse
Blasts the new-born Infant's tear,
And blights with plagues the Marriage hearse.

When analyzing a poem you must firstly be able to tell what the poem is about. normally the title of the poem gives it away but that is not always the case. After reading the poem for the first time, ask yourself what it could be about then read it again to confirm your thoughts. To critically analyze the poem use the poetic techniques such as repetition, theme, setting, diction, syntax, etc. In William Blake's poem "London" we see a number of repetition. What impact does repetition have? the use of repetition is to mainly show emphasis of the word/s repeated. A theme is found in every literature writing. A theme is simply what is the reading about, in this instance, the poem. Setting refers to the time and place in which the poem was written or represents. Diction is all about the choice of words and syntax focuses on the way sentences are structured.
