Sir William Wallace was born in Scotland and grew up to be the most well known and most respected individuals for those who fight for freedom. He was one of the best military leaders and name-takers of all time. His father was a poor landowner in Renfrew, Scotland. In 1296, King Edward I of England overthrew the Scottish king John de Balliol and unjustly declared himself the king of Scotland. Once Edward became king he did terrible things and no one liked him in Scotland.

On September 11, 1297 Wallace was confronted by a English army led by a man named John de Warenne at the Froth. As the English crossed the river they fought hard but were ultimately destroyed by Wallace’s small army, this victory gave Wallace the chance to take Stirling Castle, which he did take with force. Since Scotland was almost completely secure of English rule, he started invading the English mainland where he ravaged and took the lands of Northumberland and Cumberland.

Wallace returned to Scotland and was knighted and proclaimed Guardian of Scotland. Everything went south for Wallace in July of 1298 when Edward I returned from France to England. Edward invaded Scotland and absolutely DECIMATED Wallace, where then Wallace gave up his guardianship. There is evidence that Wallace went to France but no one knows what he did there, but when he returned the Scottish nobles had already submitted to Edward.
