At age eleven Whitman concluded formal schooling. He then sought employment for further income for his family; he was an office boy for two lawyers and later was an apprentice for the weekly Long Island newspaper The Patriot. There, Whitman learned about the printing press and typesetting. Later on after his starting career in Long Island, he worked as a publisher, editor and also as a pressman at his very own newspaper company he had created back in Huntington, New York called The Long Islander. Whitman has written and made several different works in his lifetime. One of his works, Many Health and Training, was harshly critiqued by critics and was said to be "quirky", "so over the top", "a pseudo scientific tract", and "wacky". On the other hand, however, his more successful and more well-known works are known to be Leaves of Grass and Franklin Evans or The Inebriate: A Tale of the Times. While many people have come to learn to appreciate Whitman's contributions to the English language arts, others still disagree and do not appreciate his works.
