After the Persians lost, Athens took over the leadership of the Greek world. A man named Pericles was their leader. Athens expanded and at the same time democracy was growing at home. This period was called the Age of Pericles. During this time the Athens became very attached to their democratic system. It was a direct democracy which means that people participate directly in government decisions. The Athenian Empire left the greek world divided into two major camps. Those were the Athenian Empire and Sparta. They had built two very different societies. A series of disputes finally led to the outbreak of the Great Peloponnesian War in 431 B.C. It lasted to 405 B.C. The Athens surrendered and the Athenian Empire was destroyed.
