The Minimalist Millionaire.....

Sheth family will never be the same without the most humble, humorous, philosophical, learned and witty Amitkaka.

We grew up listening to various anecdotes about our illustrious family and Shantidas Sheth in the most humorous way from you.

Sheth family is shrinking.

After losing D. C. Sheth(Papa), U K Sheth(Udayankaka), P K Sheth(PKUncle), Amitkaka will be amongst the last who studied/worked in London in the 1950s, much ahead of their times. Your minimalist way of life , simple living and high thinking since decades has become a trend in recent times. Your presence, at the time of any death in family, would make the bereaved family feel at ease.

Amitkaka, you inspired me to take up writing as a hobby. Whenever I came with my writing to run through your eyes, you would edit a word here and there and make my writing eloquent.
Alas, I wish I could have run this too by you……….

Amitkaka, you were and will always be an inspiration for generations to come

Aptly said by Chintankaka and Nisha

Sheth family has lost its soul………..
From : Shital & Toral Sheth

Dadhikaka’s untimely and sudden passing hit me hard. My favorite uncle and a benevolent influence and such a key part of mine and my sister’s childhood growing up in Kalyan Society. We all feel it more because in his passing we’ve lost parts of ourselves and we’ve lost that amazing sense that after talking to Dadhikaka - it would be fine. Our hearts would feel lighter, we would have a laugh and his counsel would be sound and make us feel better.

I have fond memories of spending countless hours in his dusty library. From the crash course in Gujarati to his “america-returned” niece to hours discussing Meghani poems and Charles Dickens or working on math or critiquing my essays - he had so much patience and generosity of spirit. He shared his encouragement with all of us - my sister, his nephews Saurin, Rajan, Chikabhai, Mannaben, and so many cousins growing up together - Urmini, Sanjubhai, Shilpi and Shital, Darshan and Mickey. Indeed his encouragement was all about the joy in the task, excellence for excellence sake and the beauty of written and spoken words - never about an external reward. It is a notion I need to do much better at with my children to honor his memory. That said, I did feel like a million bucks when he touched my feet to congratulate me on a good exam result! That goofiness, humor and wit - his tales of yesteryears of Ahmedabad and jokes at Atulmama’s “daira’ and Sharad purnima excursions will stay with us. Remember how he used to regale us all “aana na pesher bora, van vagda…. “ and have a little dance and a drink.

Dadhikaka - I am glad we could meet one last time this year. Miss you and pray that you are well and happy in god’s hands. I’ll pour you one and recite the below. "To That!"

Death, Be Not Proud

by John Donne

Death, be not proud, though some have called thee

Mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so;

For those whom thou think’st thou dost overthrow

Die not, poor Death, nor yet canst thou kill me.

From rest and sleep, which but thy pictures be,

Much pleasure; then from thee much more must flow,

And soonest our best men with thee do go,

Rest of their bones, and soul’s delivery.

Thou art slave to fate, chance, kings, and desperate men,

And dost with poison, war, and sickness dwell,

And poppy or charms can make us sleep as well

And better than thy stroke; why swell’st thou then?

One short sleep past, we wake eternally

And death shall be no more; Death, thou shalt die.

Rashmiben & Saurabhbhai, Please accept our deepest condolences on sad & untimely demise of Amitbhai. We pray Him to rest his soul in peace. Death of dear & near one takes away something from us, for ever. It is said that time is a great healer (ધન્વન્તરી). My experience is that pain does not go away. We simply learn to live with pain. I pray Him to give you & his other loved ones strength to bear irreparable loss. NBMT-CWG provided me an opportunity to know him more. My clear impression was that he was genuinely humble. He had more to say than he chose to speak. He put himself in the last row voluntarily (“સ્વેચ્છાએ”). Extraordinary qualities in today’s world. With deepest condolences once again. Nitin Shukla

Hats off to Seema Sheth-Voss & Nisha Sheth!! What an incredible tribute you have given to Dadhi Mama - An amazing & wonderful soul: Highly intelligent, terrific humorous, very jovial, philanthropist & philosophical by nature... Though professionally engineer; he shared diverse interests in fields like literature, poetry & philosophy. How can I forget his guidance & sheer diligence to help me secure full 100/100 marks in Maths for SSC exam? Not only that, when Mummy decided to do M.Phil.; and wrote a thesis on 'Women characters of George Bernard Shaw's play', it was he who garnered much of the reference material. He was truly the 'Heart' & 'Soul' of Kalyan society and a feather to the Sheth family clan.

RAJAN N SHAH

I have known Amitbhai as my brother’s friend. Of course, I knew our neighbour, Prakashbhai and Vikram electric is a childhood name and memory! But Amitbhai appears only mildly related to either. He appears in my brother's drawing room in the 1990s. My earliest good memory of Amitbhai is when he took an engaged interest in my research on the Mahagujarat struggle. He talked about those days and introduced me to Renaben. I remember Amitbhai as always so appreciative, interested and મિતભાષી. His very presence was encouraging and enlivening. He sent me a little note on my daughter’s name when she was born with research on meanings and references. It was amazing to me that he had been involved in the designing of my district library in Bromley, UK. When he mentioned it, I went and took a look at it and took pictures to show him and a pamphlet of the library. So few - છુટાછવાયા recollections, but they make up a constant, reliable, warm presence. I will miss him in Saurabhbhai and Bhabhi’s drawing room. And he is eternal - living in our memories, and what we learnt from him. I continue to learn from the shared recollections here. Thank you so much for organising this page and making him come alive again for me. Amrita in Hong Kong just now.

So so so incredibly sad that our dearest dadhikaka is no more. Still in shock. Wish I could have talked to him just once more to hear him crack another joke!

I spent many magical times when he helped us with Gujarati literature. While it was Gujarati homework, he would bring up something about his favorite poet Yeats, Dickens, Austen, Wodehouse, and others in English literature. Or economics, politics. Our love of reading and exposure to the world was through him.

And who can forget the times he’d bring a bottle of whiskey for my mom to read aloud Jajjamama’s hilarious letters. My mom’s flair of drama and dadhikaka’s comments made those sessions most memorable! His sense of humor was unparalleled; from the one liners to the silly fart poems, to the songs and essays he wrote.

And when he read something extraordinary or ate some delicacy, we can never forget his ‘adhbhoot’.

He was a huge mentor to my parents handling all their affairs in india. I don’t ever remember him getting upset, stressed, cranky. Always smiling and finding things to crack jokes and make fun of himself. Even when he was poking fun at others, he did it with such love.

I’m always on Alex’s case to purge and throw stuff out, but he never got rid of his economist magazines, because he was saving them for dadhikaka! I’m glad Rohan got to meet him....wish he had truly been able to get to know the creative genius we all so admire.

You are always in my heart, Dadhikaka! As daddy says, you are the heart and soul of Kalyan society and sheth family. ‘To that’!

Dear Rashmiben & Saurabhbhai, My heartfelt condolences on the sad demise of Amitbhai. Niranjanbhai always described Amitbhai as “Chhupo Rustom”, thanks to Amitbhai’s close encounters with literature, especially poetry. I know that he was a voracious reader and an accomplished literature explorer who could recite well known English poems by heart. I also know that Niranjanbhai always looked forward to his presence at your house on Saturday evenings. Now again Niranjanbhai will have a literary companion of his choice with him in person.

Amit Sheth (1939-2020)

Corona has snatched away from us, Amit Sheth on the fateful day of 28'th November 2020 leaving all of us stunned and shocked beyond imagination.Amit is (I am afraid to use the word 'was' because a person of his stature is immortal) my wife Beena's elder brother.

He is 81 and a Bachelor. He is a Scholar and a man of Literature & Sports. His command and interest in Prose & Poetry in English and Gujarati can not be described in words. His love for Sports can not be narrated using alphabets of any language. He would get up early in the morning or will keep awake till very late hours in night to watch on his Televison: International tournaments of Tennis, TableTennis, Badminton, Most of the events at Olympics,International Cricket matches and many more games.

He was an all rounder in many subjects. He was a voracious reader and had a great memory. Though he was a Civil Engineer by his educational qualifications, he was a man of Finance too. His understanding of Stock Market and his art in Wealth Creation was enviable.

His love for teaching Science, Mathematics and Languages to any one who approached him for learning was spontaneous. He taught so many underprivileged children from his neighbourhood and few of them are well placed in Government jobs and are employed as School teachers too. Surprisingly he taught all the subjects in Commerce stream and saw to it that a son of his domestic help earned his B.Com degree from Gujarat University.Needless to mention about his teaching of various subjects to his nephews and nieces.

He was a man of Golden Nature and remained always in great demand by his friends and relatives. He believed in the dictum 'Simple Living & High Thinking' and lived his life in Letter & Spirit of the dictum. He had very limited needs though he was quite affluent and had means to live a luxurious life.

He was soft spoken and I have not seen him raising his voice even once, during my 50 years of association with him.
In real terms, he lived his life as 'Steadfast' as described by Lord Krishna in Second Chapter of 'Gita' during his dialogue with Arjuna in the battlefield of Kurukshetra.

My tributes to Amit Sheth from the bottom of my heart. Amit Sheth, you can never die. Can only be transformed to an elevated Kingdom.

Naishadh, Beena & Rajan.

Mind was not ready to accept the unbelievable news., but it was the fact of life.
Though engineer by profession, he was the man of Literature & Sports!! On many occasions I had the opportunity to discuss & understand Gujarati & English poetry & prose. Umashanker Joshi & Snehrashmi were his favourite poets & we used to discuss many poems, dramas, essays, short stories and novels of these two poets. He used to explain in detail about the niceties of English poems of Yeats and Shally. Being one of the close associates of late Shri Bhagatsaheb , his literary knowledge was amazing. Very jovial by nature, his sense of humor was par excellence. Known as 'Gurujii' in Kalyan Society. In real sense he was like a teacher.

Entire Sheth family will feel the vaccum in his absence but one has to accept the reality of life.
May the departed soul rest in eternal peace and may God give strength to Prakashbhai, Sharmishtabhabhi, Beenaben & Saurin-Vaishali , Tushar - Reema, Rajan & all other nephews & nieces to bear this irrepairable loss 🙏🙏

Om Shanti

Gaurav Sheth

It is really, really difficult to imagine life without you amongst us. Amit bhai you are gone too soon, but no, you have a permanent place in the hearts of family members & dear friends. Can anyone forget your keen intelligence, witty & humorous nature, sober, calm & soothing presence and jovial temperament? To me, he was more than a brother; a friend, philosopher & guide. Generally high intellectual stature & humility don't go together, but here was a man humble to the core.

He was heart & soul of family gatherings, Sunday 'ડાયરો', Saturday group meetings, Sharad Poonam picnics, school friend get togethers, yearly tours & excursions. Thanks to his keen sense of humour, he could cut jokes not only with friends & family but also with the domestic staff as well.

Though civil engineer by profession, his first love was literature. He had many Gujarati & English poems at the tip of his tongue. Many a times he would tell me; " I wish, I had been teacher, I am a misfit as an engineer." Being well versed with Maths, Science, Philosophy & languages; he taught & provided invaluable help & guidance to innumerable persons. What a great support & guide he was to me during my 40 years of teaching career & in my M.Phil thesis!!

His varied interests embraced so many subjects in life; be it sports, politics, literature, philosophy, music, education, love for nature & good food. With an inquiring mind, he would delve deeply into the subject for proper understanding. He liked to do 'ચિંતન' & 'મનન' which was an intrinsic part of his being. Fortunate that he could enjoy & appreciate intellectual discussions with stalwarts like Shri S R Bhatt saheb & Bhagat Saheb. And these two great men would respect Amit bhai's view points & opinions.

It was a rare quality that he had no expectations from anybody. His requirements were very few. His non attachment to worldly things was amazing. I am sure his golden nature, simplicity, sense of humour & fun loving temperament will be remembered for a long time to come. "He was a jolly good fellow that nobody can deny." Wasn't he lucky that he was loved & respected by one & all? And aren't we fortunate that we had his great company all these years?

Amitbhai

It has been more than a week since we heard the terrible news of Amitbhai’s sudden demise. It is extremely difficult to believe that he is no longer with us. We lost not only our brother but our guide and mentor.

I have such fond memories of Amitbhai. I remember going to Ahmedabad during school vacations – we would stay at Pujya Narendrakak’s house. Renaben, Prakashbhai and Amitbhai showered so much love and affection on me and my sister. And how can I forget playing silly games with Beeniben and pranks of Amitbhai. I choke up recalling Amitbhai’s “Monku ke Nanku ke mummy nu Ladku”.

When we returned to India in 1978 Amitbhai took great interest in Seema and Nisha’s academics. He helped develop interest in reading and also introduced them to other subjects. I remember he encouraged them to join Harold Laski Institute where they attended Shri Purshottam Mavlankar’s lectures.

Another quality time with Amitbhai was the late evening reading sessions of Jawaharbha’s letters. These letters were long – on an average almost 50 pages and covered wide variety of subjects like health, family and friends. Amitbhai would want me to read these letters aloud and he would raise a toast “to that” on some classic Gujarati phrases used by Jawaharbhai. Our discussions with Amitbhai’s impromptu witty comments entertained us well into late hours of night.

Our destiny took us back to USA in 1998 and now we spend winter months in Kalyan Society. Amitbhai again played a major role – helping us look after our house, paper work and staff salaries. He would advise us on what matter was important to resolve during our visits. His daily morning walks in our compound were so reassuring. After his walk we would invariably call him in to have Maganbhai’s “Adhboot Limboopani”.

I will never forget his help in taking care of huge collection of books in our house. He advised me on how to distribute these properly. This project took many hours and stretched for few days but he had the patience to go through each book and find a suitable home for it.

We will miss talking to him over the phone. His knowledge on literature, sports, medicines and politics was amazing. Chintan enjoyed discussing American Presidential Elections with him. Coming back home is not going to be same anymore.

Amitbhai was life and soul of all family functions. Not only the Sheth family but his large friend circle will miss this true hero. Now we all have to cherish his beautiful memories of life well lived.

Mona
