The Cunninghams don't take anything that they can't pay back, which makes them seem like good people, while the Ewells are overall very mean people. How we can empathize with them: Acknowledge that they most likely do not want to be poor and cannot do much about it. Also, you could either comfort them, or invite them to eat just as the FInch's did.
