Although we only encounter Walter Cunningham, we learn a lot about their family. We know that they are poor and do not take anything they can not pay back. In the cases that they do pay something back, it is not right away and more with resources than currency.

The Cunninghams are essential to society as they help play the role of the poor or lower class. All societies need a lower class to keep a social balance. They also allow everyone else to be less greedy and more thankful for what they have .

This shows that they are kind-hearted people because although something offered to them may help them a lot, they would feel bad knowing they could not pay them back. Walter specifically also appears innocent and shy as he does not talk much and even allows Scout to rub his face without really fighting back.

Although this is true, he accepted this as he knew it was not something expected to be paid back. When Miss Caroline offers money for lunch, she adds "[y]ou can pay me back tomorrow" and sure enough he does not take it (Lee 25). However, in the Finch's case, he still paid them back with stovewood, a sack of hickory nuts, a crate of smilax and holly, as well as turnip greens throughout the course of the entire year (which was more than enough for just one meal

The Cunninghams and the Ewells are both very poor families, yet they act very differently. The Cunninghams don't take anything that they can't pay back, which makes them seem like good people, while the Ewells are overall very mean people. In addition, Walter seems like he is a step up from Ewell because he is at least wearing clean clothes. He doesn't have shoes, but he has clean clothes (and hookworms).

Scout judges him hard core and starts to say something about it when Calpurnia calls her into the kitchen to tell her that just because they live differently doesn't mean she can judge them. Specifically, she says "'There's some folks who don't eat like us... but you ain't called on to contradict 'em at the table when they don't'" which also ties into empathy and understanding their situation (Lee 32.
