Forestier.

The symbol, The fake diamond necklace, represents misfortune and suffering because Mathilde had to work for 10 years to pay off the debt of the diamond necklace, only to realize that it was merely worthless in the end. It was first introduced when Mathilde wanted a necklace to go to the party.
The symbol was developed when she found out she had lost it and thought it was real. She was very distraught as she thought the jewelry had a high price tag to it. Her and her husband spent countless hours searching for it, only to conclude that it was nowhere to be found. Mathilde had to work torturous labor for 10 years to raise money for a replacement. The symbol was concluded when Mathilde delivers Forestier the new necklace. However, Mme. Forestier reveals that it was worth only 500 francs. This means that Mathilde had suffered through years of torment for nothing.
