  • By the middle ages, this species became extinct in northern Africa because of the ivory trade.
  • Overhunting during the 18th and 19th centuries reduced elephant numbers in Southern Africa. 
  • In the 1970s, the increase in the price of ivory increased the deaths of elephants.
    The population, estimated to be at about 1.3 million in the early 1970s, dropped by more than half by 1995.
  • In 1989 the African elephant was listed as Appendix I (endangered) by CITES.
  • In 1997, the African elephant was down listed to Appendix II in some southern African countries by CITES.
  • Now the Savannah elephants is considered as a vulnerable species.

  • Habitat Destruction
    • The Savannah Elephants currently occur in sub-Saharan Africa.To avoid malnutrition, sub-Saharan Africa will need to increase its food production three-fold, turning existing elephant habitat into cropland, cause the decline of populations and habitat fragmentation. (Density-independent factors)
    • Disease and Unhealthy Elephants
    Because of the climate change and other disasters, the mother elephants become unhealthy and sick, or they get injured because poachers are hunting for them. So these cause the new born elephants are easy to get disease and die. (Density-dependent factors)
    • Climate Change
    African becomes too hot for elephants to live. It's hard for elephants to find water and meat. (Density independent factors )
    • Poaching
    Poachers killed elephants in Africa to get their valuable ivory tusks and sell them with a higher price.
