With culture being defined as the customs, arts, social institutions, and achievements of particular group, it is clear that there are many unique parts of Esperanza's life. Her culture is made up of more than just her ethnicity, but the other groups she belongs to as well. She may be an American with Mexican descent, but she is also a member of the lower class of Chicago, and a member of the Catholic faith. We then notice her maturity level change in "Hips" when she notices her age gap with Nenny seems to be larger than it used to be. Nenny seems childish to her and takes on the role of a little sister more than a friend. Lastly, in the vingette "Marin" we are given an insight to how Esperanza views the older girls, specifically Marin. She begins to see how women in her culture are treated and how they are taught to be when they are older. I was torn between two cultures when I was younger because both of them were completely different. My Lebanese culture relates to Esperanza's culture more than my American culture because it has more similarities. Like the way Latinas have to get married at a young age, or stay home and clean. That's how my Lebanese culture is, but I am proud and happy that my family gave me the opportunity to explore a new culture.
