Discuss a symbol that represents guilt (motif) and explain the connection between the symbol and guilt (the motif).

In Act 2, Scene 2, Macbeth hears the prayer from Malcolm and Donalbain's room, and believes that he should have replied in kind to their prayer of blessing. He recalls this event to Lady Macbeth "But wherefore could I not say 'Amen'?" (Act 2, Scene 2). The symbolism of the prayer and Macbeth's inability to say "Amen" characterizes his guilt. His halting of speech in prayer symbolizes his guilt as he knows he is guilty before God who has seen his murderous deed.

Give an example of dramatic irony and give details.

Dramatic Irony is when the audience or reader knows something a character(s) does not. "I go, and it is done; the bell invites me. Hear it not, Duncan; for it is a knell summons thee to heaven or to hell" (Act 2 Scene 1). This quote is Macbeth saying that he has killed the king and that he shouldn't listen to the bells. Yet, while the bells are ringing, Macbeth is the only one that can hear it. He is telling the now dead, king to not listen to bells that are only in Macbeth's head.

In Act 2 Scene 2, Macbeth had just came back from killing King Duncan, and he is hearing voices in his head, "Sleep no more! Macbeth does murder sleep', he innocent sleep,"(Act 2, Scene 2). The voices that he hears represents a symbol of guilt, because these imaginary voices are asking him why he would kill an innocent man, such as King Duncan -- One who was so generous and kind to his family, even to reward him the title of Thane of Cawdor.

In Act 2 Scene 2, Macbeth murders King Duncan, Macbeth feels remorse and expresses guilt "Will all great Neptune's ocean wash this blood clean from my hand?" (Act 2, Scene 2). The symbol of blood represents guilt, as experienced by Macbeth after he murders King Duncan, and Lady Macbeth as well. "My hands are of your colour; but I shame to wear a heart so white." (Act 2 Scene 2). This reveals that Lady Macbeth is shrugging off the guilt she feels later. Her idea of being non-cowardly is her way of showing she is fine with the murder and her hiding away the guilt in the blood as she washes the blood from her hands.

In Act 2 Scene 2 Macbeth is talking to Lady Macbeth after coming back from killing Duncan, he says "I could not say ' Amen,' When they did say ' God bless us!'". The symbol is "Amen" because Macbeth is feeling guilty that he didn't respond to their cries of 'God bless us" and "Amen". He is very upset about the task he completed and he is unable to say anything.

Discuss a symbol that represents guilt (motif) and explain the connection between the symbol and guilt (the motif).

In Act 2, scene 2 Macbeth is thinking about the events that had just occurred. The blood of King Duncan represents the guilt of Macbeth killing him. An example of this is "Will all great neptunes ocean wash this blood clean from my hand? No, this my hand will rather the multitudinous seas incarnadine, making the green one red" (Act 2, Scene 2). The symbolism of the blood shows the connotation between the colors inside the body and outside. Blood when you're dying is red, yet inside the body is green, as Macbeth says.
