From early beginnings the purpose of the ASB Polyfest arose from the vision of students, to demonstrate a student's pride in their cultural identity and heritage, and to bring together many different schools, as well as the different cultures. It gives Auckland Secondary School students the opportunity to express themselves through cultural performances and it also gives them the experience of performing to a large audience, and achieve standards of excellence.

Social factor is that it helps school children to work hard towards a goal. Polyfest is a chance for schools to work hard on their dance and compete with one another. It teachers these children about striving for something you really want and the feeling of success once you reach this goal and enables them to be proud about their achievements. For some children at school they can feel lost being in a cultural group teaches them about team work, commitment and hard work all very key attribute one must have in order to be successful. It’s also a chance to have fun, our work habits are becoming increasingly busy, we hardly take a chance to breath. Although a cultural group is hard work its very fun and gets kids motivated. Meaning that in later life they will be able to apply these skills.

Economic Impacts

This event doesn’t really make an extreme amount of profit, it either just breaks even or a little over. So it doesn’t really affect the net value of the economy. However polyfest is not about the money it is about the social aspect of the shows and the bringing community together.

There is a five dollar ticket fee at the door but this is not to make a profit this is to pay for all the expenses that had to be bought in order to make this event actually work i.e the cost of stages and sound system. Everything has a price nothing is cheap there for the money from ticketing greatly helps polyfest to run. If we look at the graph ‘Income and expenditure’ we see that in 2011 expenditure was slightly higher. Luckily all the profits from the year before go into a contingency fund this means that if the money is ever need that it can be used from this fund i.e a rainy day, or not enough people come to watch the show. However not everyone is happy about about paying to come and watch the show and there have been several complaints about the ticket pricing. However at five dollars a ticket the price is not that high for what you are going to see and what it costs to run the event. So this would be an unavoidable negative economical impact on the community but not a major one.

Environment Impacts

There is always going to be some type of negative impact when there is an increased number of people in one area like polyfest. Although the organizers did everything they could to keep litter of the ground at the end of the day the individual have to take responsibility for their waste products. This would have a negative effect on the environment because it is changing the delicate Eco-system surrounding the event. Thus could create upheaval in the food chain because if the grass dies due to pollution form polyfest. Then all the insects that live inside and fee off the grass will also die. The insects are the birds diet so if there aren’t any bug then the birds have nothing to eat. The rest of the food chain will be ruined, just because of pollutants on the grass. That why it is increasingly important that people clean up after themselves and don’t leave a mess behind because it could mean that the whole food chain goes down.

The environment is also the people that live in it the people surrounding the event could get fed up with the noise coming from the event because they live right next door to it. If the counsel got constant complaints about the noise then action would have to be taken this would mean that there was an uneasy environment in-between the neighbors and event. Which is not what the event wants? This is also a social impact but because polfest is trying to build a greater community around Auckland I thought that this would fit better in environment because you can’t just make one group happy.

A positive environmental affect is that by having recycling it allows the public and community to learn healthy practices with recycling. Thus meaning that they can put it into practice in their home and possibly making a change on the way we view rubbish. This could mean that less people use their rubbish bins and instead use their recycling bins. It also teaches the people who work at the stall how to do ‘Green’ practices that they might take to their next job. By doing this it means that green practices could catch on and start a nation-wide awareness. You always have to start somewhere and by having green practice at polyfest, that’s a start.
