This quote shows identity from those around you because the Indian girl in her class didn't want to wear Indian clothes, instead she was choosing to adapt to those around her and dress like them in order to fit in. She is finding her identity by conforming to those around her instead of her own culture.

Santha’s mother and Premila didn’t think she would understand, but she did, and she just tucked it back in her memories. It didn’t bother her very much, “because it all happened to a girl named Cynthia.” Santha’s true identity wasn’t actually the name of the girl that was given by the headmistress, it was just someone she had to be.

This quote shows how much meaning a name has and that you can’t just change it. You can’t just change a name that quickly. A name is something that someone is known as for their whole life and a name has a story behind it. She forgets the name she was given because it has no meaning to her.
