The Tale of the Three Brothers

Once upon a time there were three brothers traveling along a deserted and tortuous road at dusk. After a while, the brothers came to a river too deep for wading and too dangerous to swim. The brothers, however, were well versed in magic, so they simply shook hands and made a bridge over the treacherous waters. They were halfway through when they saw the road blocked by a hooded figure. Death spoke. She was angry that three people had been stolen from her, because it was normal for travelers to drown in the river. But Death was cunning. He pretended to greet the three brothers for his magic and said that each one had won a prize for being clever enough to escape him.

The elder brother, a combative man, asked for the most powerful wand to exist: a wand that would always win the duels for its owner, a wand worthy of a wizard who had defeated Death! She crossed the bridge, turned to an elderly elder on the bank of the river, and made a wand from a branch of the tree, handing it over to her elder brother. The second brother, who was an arrogant man, resolved to humiliate Death even more and asked for the power to restore the life to those she had taken. Then Death took a stone from the bank of the river and gave it to the second brother, telling him that the stone had the power to resurrect the dead. He asked the third and younger brother what he wanted. He was the humblest and also the wisest of the brethren and did not trust in Death. He then asked for something that would allow him to leave that place without being followed by her. And Death, unwillingly, gave him the Invisibility Cloak itself. Then Death stepped aside and let the three brothers continue their journey, who haunted the adventure they had experienced and admired the newly acquired gifts .

In due time, the brothers separated, each one took a different destiny.

The eldest son traveled a week or more, and when he reached a distant village, he sought out a fellow wizard with whom he had quarreled. Armed with the Elder Wand, the Wand Wand, could not fail to win the ensuing duel. Leaving the enemy dead on the ground, the older brother went to an inn, where he bragged loudly about the mighty wand he had snatched from Death himself, and the weapon made him invincible. That same night, another wizard sneaked up on the older brother as he slept in his bed, drunk with wine. The thief took the wand and, to be sure, cut off the older brother's throat. So Death took the first brother.

Meanwhile, the second brother traveled to his own house, where he lived alone. There, he took the stone that had the power to resurrect the dead and turned it three times in the hand. To her surprise and joy, the figure of a young girl who had hoped to marry before her early death appeared instantly before him. However, she was sad and cold, as if separated from him by a veil. Though she had returned to the world of mortals, her place was no longer there and she suffered. At this, the second brother, driven mad with desperate desire, was killed so that he could truly join her. So Death took the second brother.

Though Death had sought out the third brother for many years, he could never find it. It was only when he reached an advanced age that the younger brother stripped the Invisibility Cloak and gave it to his son. Then he welcomed Death as an old friend and accompanied her willingly. Same, they left this life.
