This week’s topic is Paper. As this was my first material inquiry, I felt uncomfortable as I wasn't sure what our aim was suppose to be. At first, it was pretty hard to get out of my comfort zone and really go beyond into playing with the paper. Once I started to feel comfortable and understand I was exploring with the paper in different ways. Everyone knows paper comes from trees, but I wanted to know how a tiny seed which grew into a tree become paper. So I researched it. Basically, to make paper from trees the logs are passed through a debarker, then they are cut into pieces, after that the wood is pressured-cooked with a mixture of water and chemicals, they then are washed and cleaned. Colour dyes and coatings are mixed in, the rest of the crude paper sheet is squeezed between two large rollers to remove most of the remaining water and ensure smoothness and uniform thickness.  The semi-dry web is then run through heated dryer rollers to remove the remaining water. I had my daughter today for class  and she was interested in the different types of materials that were on the floor. She grabbed the silver bowl and started tapping it with her hands. She liked the sound of it! Then she went and grabbed a piece of wood and started to tap it on the bowl. I looked at the corks and the bottle lids. Their was a different sound when put the bottle lid on the cork, It sounded like a horse galloping.     My body is moving by touching the different materials, swishing the ribbon in the air, tapping the corks with the bottle lids on and bending down to reach more materials.
    Where does the material come from? The material comes from different things, mostly trees.
    If I fold it what happens? when I folded the small match sticks it breaks.
    If I cut it what happens? when I cut the paper it becomes two pieces
    If I pour water on it what happens? when I poured water on the paper towel it became wet, heavy, the colour changed and changed shape

This material inquiry was done at my placement.  As the centre had a shadow box I got loose items around the centre and made faces with the children. We checked out the different shades on the face. We put a blue cellophane and it came out as light blue where as if the item was dark on the shadow box it was black. The children were amazed how shadow and transparent things worked.     If I cut it what happens? when I cut the cellophane it becomes two pieces kind of becomes sticky.

This material inquiry was done at my place. As I was playing with the clay I can see my finger-print as I hold it with both my hands,  as I push down on the clay it spreads out, when I roll it it becomes fragile and breaks off. As I was playing with it, I realised the clay had a few different shades of brown. I decided to see how clay reacted to things so I grabbed the clay and decided to use it as a pencil and draw with it on the paper. Once I used it as a pencil I let it dry for a bit to see what it would do, while waiting for that I decided to make a lady with the clay then I decided to add water on it. I realised if you add a little of water to the clay it becomes smooth and easier to work with and if you add way to much water if becomes really gooey but soft. According to Encounter with Materials in Early Childhood Education (2017), clay needs to have some kind of liquid mixed with it, if not it dries up and cracks, which then it is hard to work with. 
    Once I finished the activity with water I looked back at the picture and it became really soft, but it went as a light brown colour.     If I fold it what happens? it folds but starts cracking 
    If I cut it what happens? it becomes into pieces and there is a different pattern once I cut it.
    If I pour water on it what happens? it depends too muh becomes gooey and a little becomes soft and easier to work with

In class we did a little activity. we had to pick 3 things. we got a stapler, a picture of a group outside and a word inside. We then had to make a story about it. Our story was about a class. They were deciding what activity they wanted to do inside and outside, one of the girls thought to do Scavenger hunt! It was a great idea. The leader of the group made a list to find and one of the things to find was the stapler.
