Dilemma

I am having trouble keeping every student engaged throughout an entire lesson. Standard A1 focuses on having learners actively engaged in the learning process. Therefore, this is the standard I am struggling with. I am trying to differentiate every lesson, by using different practices to present information. However, there are always some students who lose interest in the lesson. Students begin to talk, day dream, doodle, etc. This dilemma is important to me, because I want to ensure that every student is focused and retaining the information from the lesson. If students are not actively engaged, they will not learn to the best of their abilities. If this dilemma is not resolved, I will not be achieving my goal of effectively teaching every student. It is my responsibility to teach students information in a way that engages them. This dilemma has taught me that I will need to differentiate lessons even more, in order to hold the attention of all of the students.

Success

My success deals with my student teacher analysis report. done by my mentor teacher weekly. For the first four weeks, I received a score of three out of four for the category of "asks inferential - type questions to which no one answer exists." However, after being persistent, on week 5 of my analysis I received a four out of four on that skill. I view this as a success, because I have been working on trying to "perfect" this skill for four weeks. I finally received the score I wanted, by working hard to achieve my goal. By achieving this goal, it also allows me to better my instruction as a teacher. I really focused on asking a variety of higher-level thinking questions. I would word questions in a variety of ways that did not have one specific answer. This allowed for more participation from students as well. This aligns to standard B2, of being responsive to professional feedback.
