The first step was to create an initial set and props list. We initially figured out the set and props we needed for each scene. We then further divided the list into sections of props we already own, items we can borrow, and what we need to buy.

Budget sheet

I created a document containing a list of the set and props that we needed to buy or borrow, and estimated the cost of each item, along with a suggestion for where to buy the items from. This would allow us to work out how much budget we would need to use on set/props. As for borrowing props, I included columns where we could insert the date we got the item and the day we returned it which could be completed during production, and would keep everyone informed as to whether the props have been returned or not.

Leaflets

We needed leaflets as part of our 'preacher scene' where the preachers give Sally (our main character) some leaflets about religion and going to church. As this would be a key prop in this scene, myself and Kyle designed the leaflets on Canva. We used fake contact details and addresses, and decided to use dark red and gold/yellow as the main colour in the leaflets.

Rehearsal Day

(15/04/2024) The room we were using to film our interview scene in was Allerton A107. It was a classroom, office looking room with little colour or character. The main pop of colour within the room was the red chairs. So when myself, Kyle and Adam were set dressing this room, we decided that making posters with blue and red within them would bring in a pop of colour as well as tying the red colours together. I also thought that blue and red would carry well on camera and catch the audiences attention, but not distract from the actors. I downloaded some posters from google, and then redesigned some on Canva, and printed them out and stuck them on the pin board in the office room to check if they looked good for this scene. We positioned the posters in a way that would make the pin board look like a normal workplace noticeboard, and included a retirement notice for 'Jenny' to give a subtle hint as to why they may be recruiting and holding an interview that Sally is attending. Some of the posters e.g. 'TEAMWORK' was designed to be 'cheesy' to add to the comedy in the scene. So we pinned these posters up during the rehearsal, ready for the filming day on Tuesday.

We also rearranged the tables and put coffee cups, a water bottle, a laptop, a notebook and pens on the table to set the room as an office. Each interviewer has a coffee cup with water inside in front of them, interviewer 1 has a laptop to use a prop for typing and interviewer 2 has a notebook, pen and a tablet. There was then 2 enveloped on the table as well, to give the impression of having other candidates CVs to look at which would increase tension for Sally.

There are whiteboards and a projector screen on the back wall of the room, this couldn't be left blank and so Adam created a powerpoint with stereotypical images on, to suggest the job interview is at a travel agents, as well as the stereotypical family and travel images adding more comedy to the scene. And on the whiteboard was written "Today's proverb: One good turn deserves another." this was once again 'cheesy' but was ironic and included the name of our film 'One Good Turn'.

(16/04/2024) - During filming day 1, I put the props and set into their places and made sure it all looked how I wanted it to, I also checked with continuity as to whether it was in the same place as in rehearsals.

Filming Day 2

(17/04/2024) - The set/props needed to be different for the second day of filming as we were recording a different scene. It was still in the same location, but was a flashback and was less naturalistic. I came up with the idea of changing some of the writing on the posters, as well as the message on the board, changing it from "One good turn deserves another" to "One BAD turn deserves another" to foreshadow the scene. On the posters I changed the writing to say "We are not recruiting Sally", instead of "We are recruiting", and the teamwork poster was ripped in half, as well as the 'SMART goals' poster being replaced with an unmotivating quote "No one cares how sad you are. Just work hard and make something out of you.", all of these were subtle changes but if noticed by the audience would make the scene even more dramatic.

Filming Day 3 - House

(22/04/2024) - The set and props were firstly organised in the kitchen of the apartment. I placed 2 mugs on the worktop, along with water glasses, milk and a teapot filled with tea so that the actors could actually make a cup of tea rather than having to pretend. As for the rest of the kitchen/living area, I put a plate of 'jammy dodger' biscuits on the table and a plate with a knife and fork, and finally a glass and jug of water. These small props make the apartment look more 'lived in', as well as some of the props being in the script e.g.the wine bottle (filled with apple juice and water) in the fridge and wine glass on the worktop next to it so that it was easily accessible for the actors in the scene.

The apartment has a very unique style, it is bright, stylish and modern but still with vintage aspects and decorations, when sorting props and set for this location I had to ensure that it matched the aesthetic. I chose a hot pink photo frame which was filled with a photo of the actors together to put on the bedside table. The pink photo frame is a bright colour to not only match the other bold colours in the room but also draw attention to it, as it is almost on the opposite side of the colour wheel so contrasts to the green walls.

I was in charge of designing and placing the set and props for the 'preacher scene' which was filmed in Peel Park. Previous to filming, myself, Adam and Kyle designed 'church' leaflets that have to be given to Sally in the preacher scene. These leaflets contained fake locations and contact details but still seemed realistic, as well as having inspirational quotes from the Bible, which were relevant to the anxieties Sally was experiencing during previous scenes. I also made sure that the colours of the leaflet were maroon and gold as these colours would not only bring out the colours of the flowers in the background of the scene, but also match the costumes of the preachers. Someone also suggested to me that we could have a bible on the table to make the religion more obvious, so I booked out two bibles from the library and had one opened on the table, and one closed that read 'Holy Bible' on the front.

Originally I had decided that I wanted a table in front of the preachers for this scene because it would give a place for the leaflets to her displayed on as well as being something I have often scene with preachers before in the streets, where they have religious books and texts on table in front of them, so this would make it look more realistic. We didn't secure a small table soon enough however, and had to use a big table from the New Adelphi which made the table look a little bit bare, which is another reason why we decided to put the Bibles on the table too. On the day that we filmed it was quite windy, so we ended up having to tape the leaflets to the tablecloth to stop them blowing away.

Hugh Colman said "The designer is the eyes of the production." (Preston, 1995, 00:53) He was referring to the the set designer and was explaining the importance of the set designer for the visuals of the production, not only for the cast and crew but also for the audience.
