Yunzhu Ma & Huan Zhang & Yi Yu & Yumeng Zhang & Yuxi Yang

We strongly agree with Cook's opinion because using L1 in classroom can help language learners to figure out some difficulties in understanding the specific usage and meaning of L2 words and grammatical rules and patterns and enable learners to comprehend L2 knowledge more easily. Also, instructors can manage class more effectively by reasonably using L1 in class and give learners some clear instructions when they encounter some L2 language problems.

Anni Xu, Ainsley Li, Jingfan Zhang, Yan Xu, Zhen Wei.
2.Do you believe that native speakers should be the only ones who are able to teach TESOL? Yes / No, why?
We don't think that native ones should be the only one to teach TESOL.
First of all, L2 users’ knowledge of a second language is not the same as that of native

speakers even at advanced levels (Cook, 1999). Although a L2 learner could use the second language fluently, due to the cultural background, they could not be able to understand L2 as the native ones, so if there are only natives who teach TESOL, then L2 may encounter problems that could not be explained well by teachers neither be understood by learners. That is why we need Non-native English speakers with advanced English level.

Second, the syllabus of the TESOL courses needs to take into account what is special about L2 users’ grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, so that time is not wasted on teaching aspects of language that are unnecessary or impossible for L2 users. Non-native teachers have been through the process of learning English themselves before, so they already know what works and what doesn’t. This can be important for students in beginning level.

Using L1 to explain complex language forms, grammar patterns and concepts.
2. Motivation, self-esteem, confident, sense of belonging.
3. If the teacher use students' L1 can create a relaxing atmosphere.
4. Improve students' bilingual competence and cognitions.

Negative Impact
1. The duration of the class is limited, so students may have less opportunities to practice L2.
2. In some case, cognitive systems are different between students's first language and target language. Therefore, students may make errors in L2 output due to their L1 in grammar and pronunciation.

Would you use one of these strategies in your TESOL class? why?

Teacher can use L1 to explain the grammatical knowledge more explicit. Since a few specific tense are nonexistent in the different lingusistic systems, it’s apparently much easier to use L1 to make clear the grammatical rules. Also, In this case, it will help the students have a better understanding in L2 by using their background knowledge in L1. Also, in most of the cases, there are similar grammatical concepts between L1 and L2. the students can easily shift from one to another.
In addition, we can use the L1 to simplify complex academic terms. In this way, students can understand what they learned in class better. Also, it is much easier for them to elaborate their ideas in details when they have to share their ideas about some theories they are taught.

An expert doesn't necessarily need to have a "native understanding" of English but should be knowledgable and have strong teaching skills. L2 teachers may better understand the mistakes and difficulties that L2 learners face.

The article says that an L2 speaker's goal is not to be a "fake native speaker" and they should see instances of successful L2 learners instead of "failing the native speaker target". The goal for many students is "using the L2 competently" and may be different from monolingual native speakers.

Do you think there is a role for L1 in the TESOL classroom? Yes or no? Why?
We agree with Cook's opinion, and we think both teachers and students can benefit from using L1 in the TESOL classroom.
Teachers are able to manage the class more effectively by using L1 appropriately, and they are more likely to build a closer relationship with students. When students encounter some L2 language problems, teachers can also provide clear instructions with L1.
In addition, it is easier for students to understand some specific meaning of L2 words and complex grammatical rules if teachers use L1 appropriately. There is an interactive relationship between L1 and L2 (Cook, 1999). L1 can help students deepen the understanding of L2 concepts and knowledge, which is beneficial to promote the development of L2.
