By Claire A. Nivola
Media: Literary Picture Book
Summary: Wangari grew up in the highlands of Kenya, its abundance of wildlife always reminded her of the importance of nature. But over time, as more and more land was cleared, Kenya was transformed. When Wangari returned home from college in America, she found the village gardens dry, the people malnourished, and the trees gone. How could she alone bring back the trees and restore the gardens and the people?

Theme Connection: This text supports readers' understanding of the ways human populations live in a variety of habitats and how the changes of habitats affects the organisms that live there. Also, how 1 person's efforts can make a difference.

Complexity: AD870L

Instructional Uses: I recommend using this text for an interactive read aloud where the teacher can pause for modeling of inferences and discuss the content of the text with students. This would be important given the reactions some students may have to the content and the background knowledge needed for comprehension.
