Putera Muhammad Shazwan bin Abdul Halim 191951

At first, when I was assigned to the MINIC project, it was hard to wrap my head around the idea of such an event due to my inexperience. The progress were also hard to do, as we all are from different programs, therefore, different schedules and different responsibilities. However, after actually undergoing the project, it was certainly a very fun project. It helped me to think creatively about the products that we were going to do, and it helped me to understand how to properly showcase an idea that you have.

Siti Arifah Binti Mohd Turjah 193363

On the first day of group division, we all got a new faces and members from different courses. We got to know each other and short self-introduction. In the beginning, I truthfully didn’t know what to do like I have no idea at all. And everytime they asked about what are we gonna do, I got blank. But, it is actually the challenges that we as a student have to face and find out the answer or the ways to overcome it.

So, as we got ‘Forestry’ as application for our MINIC group, we found out what the problems that happened in the forest first. Then, we came out with reforestation takes a long time to recover as our big problem. One of us suggested that we use fungi and yoghurt to apply it to the roots, which is to help the tree to receive more nutrients. It is a symbiosis interaction. Yoghurt is use as the medium for the fungi to stay active.

Then, come to our first meeting. Everyone agreed with that idea, hence Dharrmin as a leader, asked us to find out the articles related to this problems and posted it to the padlet. It is actually for us to find out what are the most suitable microbes that can be used especially for the forest in Malaysia.

In our next meeting, we agreed on what microbes that we are going to use. The bacteria that we proposed was Rhizobium sp. and for fungi was Laccaria bicolor. Then, we met Dr. Asilah to approve our idea and did some improvement on what kind of possible questions that might come out from the judges. But, we got to change the microbes to fungi only which is Tomentella badia because we found out that it was more easier than having two microbes.

After that, we decided to work on the prototype, poster and video. These parts were the toughest time where we all gathered and brainstorm the best idea. We built the hydroponic system as our prototype. As our poster and video, it were actually last minute idea because we got some problems with that. But in the end, we were able to overcome it although we were all tired with classes and other works.

On the MINIC day, I found out that only our group was the simple one with no decoration at all. Just simple and last minute decoration. So, when the judges came to our group and we presented our microbes, there were a few questions that we need to think again, but we were able to answer it. One of the judges gave us many question because we know that she is expert in plant. The other one seems interested because she said what if we apply it on our plant. And another one judges gave some advise about the plant chosen as our prototype was not suitable for forestry.

Then, came to the final one which was the best part ever. We know that our group did the great job but we did not expected to be the first runner up. So, what we were going through these weeks together, I got the idea to be a researcher is not the easy job. But it gone through many obstacles and challenges to achieve the success.

Nurul Izzah Ilyana Binti Mohamad Suari
192307
First of all, my name is Nurul Izzah Ilyana Binti Mohamad Suari (192307) from Group 3. My reflection from this MINIC 2017 project is very good. This project helps me a lot in order to become creative and innovative. It drives me to think outside of the box like scientists to create the prototype and solution for the problem. Through this project also, i could make friends from other courses and changed the ideas to create a great solution. I enjoyed doing this project because it taught me a lot of new experiences that i can develop it into my life. I learned that cooperation among the participants is very important to make our project successful as all of us can contributed ideas and sight each person. In my view, this MINIC project should be held again in the future as it can train student become more creative, innovative as the meaning of MINIC is microbes invention, innovation and ideation challenge. Last but not least,I would like to thank all the lecturers for their guidance and thanks all of my group members for your cooperation and commitment. Thank you.

Aiman Wadhihah bt Ruslan (193593)
Based on my opinion, this project was really great and very interesting. At first, i found it really tough to made it because of a group that consist members from others programme. So, its hard to get a right time to have a meeting together. But when all of us tried to give their best of commitment, we can over come with that problems. We managed to have a meeting more than 5 times. Now, i realize that with a group that consist members from other programme, we can make many new friends. Then, for me this project is interesting because it is my first time doing a project that comes out with a big poster and prototype. Futhermore, with this project, i gain a lot of knowledge based on forestration and microbe. With the help of this project, it helps in increasing my confidence level when i present it to the judges.

Although, I was a bit slow in the beginning, I managed to catch up. Getting the theme Forestry was a little shocking for me as I became blank. After discussing the theme with my teammates, we received many suggestions. We finally came to a conclusion in choosing our problem statement on how to increase the reforestation in Malaysia. We first thought of using the microbe in the yoghurt on the roots of the plants to increase the uptake of nutrients from the soil which will eventually increase the growth of the plant. However, awe still unsatisfied with our method and so we did more research and we finalized to use mycorrhizal association between a fungi and the root of the plants. We first decided to use Lacaria bicolor as the fungi and the techniques used to culture the plant is by using hydroponic technique. These ideas were supported by Dr. Asilah. However, then I felt that these fungi is only suitable for cooler temperatures and will not suit the Malaysian weather. Hence, further discussion with Dr. Wan helped us in confirming a new fungi named Tormentella badia to be used in reforestation in the Malaysian weather and also land. On the day of MINIC, we managed to present ourselves well and were all happy as we won the first runner up. To be honest, I am very happy in working with my teammates as all of them worked together from the beginning especially in buying the plants for the prototypes, finding journals and helping to do the poster and the abstract.
