I chose SDG 11, "Sustainable cities and communities" ,among the 17 SDG. Contamination and unhygienic living condition hums beneath every health related discussions, which directed me to choose SDG 11, as, poor infrastructure triggers disease, hence related to nursing.

As a consequence of rapid urbanization and industrialization, population in cities rocketed over the past few decades; in search of employment and advanced lifestyles. This ultimately resulted in population explosion in multiple metropolitan cities and adverse effects associated with it.

For a start, consider housing, only one in three residents have proper housing facility, meanwhile others reside in slums. According to the reports in 2020, around 1.1 billion urban residents lives in slums, which is expected to peak to 2 billion in the next three decades. Congested slums have limited access to resources like clean drinking water, they have poor sanitation facilities and often acts as an excellent ground for propagation of rodents. These unhygienic conditions all together gave rise to multiple communicable disease such as rodent borne illness like leptospirosis, water borne illness such as cholera, typhoid . Aside this, studies proved that, blood borne infections like HIV and hepatitis are more likely to spread in crowded slums than other areas with less population.

In addition to poor housing, pollution is another critical element. Despite the economic growth of a country, proliferation in industries and population, polluted air, water and soil ,cumulatively made a hike in the graph of major illness. Not only it harms human beings, but also, is a thread to the entire ecosystem.

From above , it is crystal clear that lower middle class and lower class population are profoundly impacted from these issues, which is exacerbated by poverty.

A set of nursing intervention, which I think can sort out this issue is listed below.

1. Conducting health surveys in undeserved areas of society

2. Health education and other health promotion methods

3. Awareness campaign

4. Conducting medical camp for screening and treatment purposes

5. Provision of better housing facilities along with authorities

6. Provision of safe drinking water along with authorities

7. Implementation of birth control measures

8. Implementation of rodent preventive measures.

9. Awareness regarding reducing pollution and conservation of bio diversity

10. Promoting education

11. Periodic health check up at industries for workers

12. Implementation of financial schemes such as treatment free of cost , along with authorities

To conclude, I would like to reiterate that, SDG 11 is a crucial to address multiple disparities in the society. Health care workers and authorities should hold hands together to crack this issues that prevail in this society .

Question 3: How can nursing leadership advocate for multisectoral collaboration (housing, sanitation, education) to improve health outcomes?

-> Nursing leaders have a vital role in bringing together different sectors like housing, sanitation, and education to work towards better health. They can organize meetings or forums where stakeholders share information about the community’s needs and find common solutions. Because nurses are often trusted by the community, they can act as a bridge between residents and policymakers, helping decision-makers understand how poor living conditions affect health. For example, a nurse leader might collaborate with housing officials to address unsafe homes, which would reduce health risks.

In my view, nurses should expand their roles beyond clinical care and actively participate in conversations about improving overall living conditions for their communities.

●Question 7: How can health promotion be tailored to this community considering cultural norms, literacy levels, and socioeconomic constraints?

-> To make health promotion effective in this community, messages need to be clear, simple, and respectful of cultural traditions. Using straightforward language and visual aids helps reach people with low literacy. Engaging local leaders, such as religious figures or respected community members, can also increase acceptance of health advice. Moreover, it’s important to design activities that fit people’s busy schedules and limited budget ,for exp, offering brief health workshops during weekends or sharing affordable, healthy recipes.

I believe the most important thing is to listen carefully to the community’s needs and tailor programs accordingly instead of applying one-size-fits-all solutions.

3) Nursing leadership should advocate multisectoral collaboration by prioritizing the direct impact of social determinants such as housing, sanitation, and education on health outcomes. Nurse leaders should inspire policymakers and non-health sector stakeholders to endorse integrated solutions for tackling underlying causes of poor health. By encouraging cooperation, participation in policy development, community engagement, and evidence-informed decision-making, nursing leadership can foster health prioritization within sectors to ultimately improve population health and lead to more equitable outcomes.

7) To effectively promote health in a community with distinctive cultural mores, disparities in literacy, and socioeconomic constraints, health promotion must be articulated thoughtfully to integrate the lived experience of its members. This involves engaging credible community stakeholders and leaders to secure cultural acceptability and appropriateness; simplifying health messages by utilizing imagery, local language, and oral messaging to overcome literacy impediments; and developing low-cost, pragmatic interventions which are affordable and sustainable for economically challenged communities. By adopting a culturally responsive, inclusive, and equity-minded approach, health promotion is not only informative but empowering, it leads to improved health outcomes and greater community resilience.
