I chose this display of colorful flatware to serve as a visual representation of my formative project because while flatware is an essential tool, it has little value on its own. It makes eating and serving much easier, but without the food, it is just decoration.
My formative assessment requires the students to give a definition and an example of each literary term. While this is a representation of valuable and necessary skill-based knowledge, it is a basic level of understanding. Like the flatware, it is a tool, and means little by itself. Being able to use this knowledge to analyze text is the ultimate goal.

I chose a large microphone to represent the primary middle assessment because this assessment requires students to think about the words they put out into the world. This assessment is really two paired assessments: one that requires an objective summary and one that requires only opinions and reactions. In doing this, I hope to make the students think about the information and opinions they choose to share, as well as give them a platform to share their ideas. Part of this assignment is to simulate "live-tweeting" a book, which will be posted on the class Twitter account as a way to amplify their voices. When one is talking to a greater audience (as is made possible by social media as it is by a microphone), he or she must choose his or her words more carefully.

This sculpture by Frank Stella immediately caught my attention as an accurate representation of my summative project. It is colorful and I personally found it visually appealing. As the students will be trying to publicize the book they read with their projects, so appeal is a major factor. This piece is also a three dimensional collage of sorts, as it brings together a variety of things to make a cohesive product. The expectation is that students will put all of their learning of literary devices and analyzing texts into a single project. While this is perhaps an ambitious plan, if executed well, the final project will be a lot like Stella's sculpture. The multimedia element of the piece can also serve as a metaphor for the class website, which will compile the students' different projects on different books into a single, cohesive publicity website.
