It makes eating and serving much easier, but without the food, it is just decoration.
My formative assessment requires the students to give a definition and an example of each literary term. While this is a representation of valuable and necessary skill-based knowledge, it is a basic level of understanding. Like the flatware, it is a tool, and means little by itself. This assessment is really two paired assessments: one that requires an objective summary and one that requires only opinions and reactions. In doing this, I hope to make the students think about the information and opinions they choose to share, as well as give them a platform to share their ideas. Part of this assignment is to simulate "live-tweeting" a book, which will be posted on the class Twitter account as a way to amplify their voices. It is colorful and I personally found it visually appealing. As the students will be trying to publicize the book they read with their projects, so appeal is a major factor. This piece is also a three dimensional collage of sorts, as it brings together a variety of things to make a cohesive product. The expectation is that students will put all of their learning of literary devices and analyzing texts into a single project. While this is perhaps an ambitious plan, if executed well, the final project will be a lot like Stella's sculpture.
