Have you ever used existing rubrics and checklists to assess collaborative work? Have you ever constructed your own rubrics or checklists for this purpose? What about involving students in the design of rubrics, checklists or other assessment tools? What have been your experiences? What do you think of the tips given for constructing rubrics and checklists in the video? Are the guidelines and examples given in the CO-LAB Assessment Guidelines useful?

This is presented before the students start their project activities. The project includes: writing a questionnaire and carrying out a survey, writing a health report according to the data of the survey and giving advice on how to live a healthier life, showing the data of their survey in a diagram as well as work in groups (creative work). Overall point is given for presentation of group work as well as for the work done during 3 previous lessons. The teacher evaluates the questionnaire and the report.

All collaborative activities require careful evaluation of social and interaction skills between team members. To do this are very useful both assessment rubrics that checklists. I believe, however, that these must be built very carefully if we are to be used also by students. As suggested by MOOC coordinator is useful student participation in the construction of rubrick and checklists. In fact I have never done, but certainly in the future I want to try. I attach below a rubric that I use for the assessment of skills and social skills and team working

To construct a rubric the first step is to decide on the level of knowledge that the rubric should assess. The next step is to establish assessment criteria and progress levels for each criterion. Usually we use 4 levels of progress, assigning 1 as the lowest level furthest away from reaching the objectives, and 4 as the highest level, closest to reaching the objectives. Each level needs a clear descriptor to avoid any doubts. It’s important to bear in mind two important tips when constructing rubrics. The first is that as noted by the researcher Brookhart, the biggest mistake teachers make when using rubrics is that they focus on the task or product, and not the learning outcome or proficiency the task is supposed to get students to demonstrate

Fátima, Portugal When I propose a team work, as I’ve already said
before, I present some points to consider in the evaluation, using a check
list, but also by an “open answer”, in which students express their personal
and objective views about their work and colleagues work.

Sometimes, according to the work and the time for its
realization, I use the scale of qualitative evaluation: insufficient,
sufficient, good and very good. In other cases, I use the percentage scale
between 0 to 100%: level 1 is from 1 to 20%; level 2 from 21 to 49%; level 3
from 51 to 74%;level 4 from 75 to 89% and level 5 of 90 to 100%.

Also students give their opinion and present their
arguments when they have different opinions.

I have used rubrics and checklists for many years. and find them really useful. A good rubric can be used for many purposes and should give the studetns a clear understanding of what they are aiming for. It is extrememly important that the rubric is shared with the students before a task. It is often very useful to construct a rubric with your students but it takes a lot of time. I have used the rubistar tool to help with this process. We recently used a rubric for a homework research project and received positive feedback from parents about how this helped them to guide and assist their child through the process. Checklists are easier to construct with the students and provide quick and straightforward guidance for a task. The guidelines provided are useful to think about when constructing your assessment tool.

I have adapted existing rubrics and created new ones related to learning goals for ESL integrated skills supported by ICT with indicators for metacognitive and collaborative skills . Checklists and rubrics are of great help for teachers and students. It is important to include student voice when constructing them , applying them and evaluating the whole process diachronically if possible to ponder our praxis and students' performances over a lapse of time. Rubrics and checklists shape the way we teach and assess and help students' self & peer assessment . They should be closely related to what has been done in class, shared with students, with descriptors and grades for each indicator or target and paths for remediation and advancement. There are great tools that help teachers build effective rubrics for authentic assessment but they largely depend on teachers' expertise to manage teaching and assessment from a pedagogical point of view. As such direct observation, timely substantive decisions and students' evidence through performances and productions are of major importance when assessing learning paths.
I find all the information in the video useful including tips and guidelines.
https://spotlight.edmodo.com/product/assessment-tools-resources--327229/

For this type of activity I am using presentation rubric.For 10-11 th grade students in chemistry lesson; they areresponsible from preparing an experiment. They have to construct their own method. For this activity, I am using experiment rubrics. Also I add other rubrics in my learning diary.

I’ve never implemented proper rubrics for collaborative work yet, even when the work has been based on tasks where my students have worked in small groups and collaborated.

I think involving students in the design of assessment tools is a good idea because this would increase their responsibility and motivate in the process of learning.

The only rubrics I used and I still use in my teaching as an EFL teacher are those shared among the colleagues of foreign languages in my school which are more descriptive charts of all the marks students may get, which relate to the 4 skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. The more recent rubric recently introduced defines the 3 level of competence students is at at the end of Middle School (13 years of age), which is subdivided into a low, a medium and a high level.

I use online exercises with checklists, which my students appreciate, but now I have to be careful to assign exercises that must be short. I will try to follow the tip of assessing the learning outcomes instead of the task itself or the product, even this would be more difficult according to me, and more upstream if we think that parents usually expect a good and easy mark, like their children, on uncomplicated task they have performed or maybe on the product which is often simple. This means that I also have to create more complex and significant tasks. For what concerns the CO-LAB assessment guidelines, at a first glance I can see they contain useful tips as for when to use rubrics or checklist, the very useful chart about the group and individual assessment, so I think I will have to create one to experience how all this work.

In my practice I do not usually use rubrics and checklists to evaluate collaborative work. However, I have already constructed rubrics and checklists to use in individual students assessment. I do not usually involve students in creating these assessment tools. By getting involved, students are likely to look at the assessment process with other eyes. I believe they will be able to better understand and identify himselfs with the objectives of the assessment.
In the context of teaching Portuguese as a second language, students are assessed on the basis of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
In order for the evaluation be clear, rigorous and effective, in my school, rubrics and checklists were created for the different levels of linguistic proficiency, using performance descriptors.
I think the tips for building the rubrics and checklists proposed in the video are very pertinent.
The CO-LAB Guidelines for Assessing Collaborative Learning in the Classroom, available in the Module 3 Resource Section, I consider it an added-value and useful as it helps us clarify some concepts, help us in organizing the evaluation process and in the construction of several assessment tools.

Involving students in the design of assessment tools is effective, because they are much more able to understand the assessment objectives. The CoLab assessment guidelines which focus on students being involved in the creation of the rubric is a great idea.

I think Dr. Valente suggested a valid alternative to us teachers being a scary figure of reference in the class judging their work. To this regard, I successfully implemented peer tutoring in my lessons, in couple or small groups, but I haven’t officially introduced any peer assessment, so my students still depend on me and on my experience in assessing. This means that they still support each other in hoping to get good marks from the teacher, and are not at all independent.

If I introduced self-assessment as a routine practice, I think my students would be very interested and have fun because they would learn while recognizing their strength and weaknesses, and build up their self-awareness. Dr. Valente made me realize here that if I only implement peer assessment, the weaker students would rely too much on the most confident students thus avoiding taking responsibilities.

The assessment tools must be different. When we are assessing any work at the end of a class, it should be a simple one easy to implement. However if we was wish to give general or specific information about the work progress, for example, we need a more specific one to collect all the information we need. It can show scales, trend lines or graphics, and it will include Likert scales, checklists, rubrics, quizzes...
Using rubrics also list the criteria for a work and articulate gradation for the criteria and knowing that they are very useful for teacher, self and peer assessment. I think it will be a very useful, students' motivation to involve them when the teacher will design the rubrics.
Participating in the rubrics construction the students will understand and better identify which are the assessment objectives.
I think that all the teachers who do this kind of work, has to create his/her own rubrics, checklists or any other tools.

I have used rubrics and check-lists extensively during my experience as a teacher in the UK. In most courses that I delivered, there was a portfolio aspect of the formal assessment (known as "coursework") where students where asked, for example, to produce a structured report for a given experiment. Grading criteria were very analytic and marking this type of work was very time consuming. However, I have also used simplest rubrics and, recently, I have developed my own rubric to grade students' tests according to the competencies that they demonstrate. For me they can be a really powerful tool to clarify to students what is expected of them for a certain grade and, more importantly, what their next learning step is.

I always found them useful in order to make clear to me before than to the students what I wanted them to realize. Checklists are a new tool I've never used, but thanks to this course I've discovered how useful they can be in order to change my perspective: from assessment of learning to assessment to learning. Checklists give students a clear idea what they are expected to do without being frightened about evaluation. They are a good method for developing self-awareness and a metacognitive approach in formative assessment. I have read the tips in the guideline and I totally agree, but I think I will involve my students in designing rubrics and checklists only in the future.

3.7 Collaborative learning - What to assess and how?Have you ever used existing rubrics and checklists to assess collaborative work? Have you ever constructed your own rubrics or checklists for this purpose? What about involving students in the design of rubrics, checklists or other assessment tools? What have been your experiences? What do you think of the tips given for constructing rubrics and checklists in the video? Are the guidelines and examples given in the CO-LAB Assessment Guidelines useful?Personally, I have never thought of assessing colab activities, as here in Austria it is all about one’s own achievements; when doing group work, it has usually be done without implementing assessment, as the fruits of the groupwork will then be seen in the individual achievement of their tests, artefacts, documents .The tips in the video and the advice in the two texts are vital in order to write one’s own rubric, still it is very theoretical and to break this down into a real life rubric for a specific learning scenario is another task and I suppose a time consuming task. I have rarely ever involved the students in building a rubric ( mainly because time is short and if I do this I will need extra time, but it is definitely worth a try

Even though I have never constructed new rubrics in order to assess collaborative work, I often use jigsaw rubrics As for specific techniques, in preparing jigsaw rubrics I replace some of the information with numbered gaps, subsequently making cards of the information from the gaps and giving each card a letter to identify it. If my classroom collaborate with senior schoolmates, as it often happens in the lab, more skilled students are usually proposed to complete the gaps in their own words, i.e. suggesting simpler descriptors. After completing the rubric making, the following task is to give each group one category to score using it. Then each team has to use the above rubrics while their peers are holding presentations. At the end of the activity the class scores are taken into account both for formative and summative assessment.

I use grids and rubrics but I must admit that usually they are aimed to assess the individual work or the group work plus the individual work (presentation, answering questions). In the last year I was introduced to the competences assessment. The first time I really had to deal with this was on last December in Florence, to the National eTwinning Conference, when Prof. Enzo Zecchi explained us a lot about this. Up to that time, as many Italian teachers, when at the end of the 10th grade I had to evaluate competencies, I just wrote "sufficient" if the final mark was 6/10, "acceptable" if the final mark was 7/10, "good" if the final mark was 8/10 and "very good" if it was 9/10 ore 10/10. I was aware that was a silly thing but actually nobody cares about this in our country and when you are at the end of the school year, tired, with the perspective you have to spend an extra month in the final exams, you are easily convinced that this assessment is as good as another but for sure it is faster. Prof. Zecchi's conference, instead, showed us real rubrics and real assessments and really opened to me a completely new world. We as eTwinning ambassador of our region (Liguria - Italy) invited him to our regional conference and he spoke about two hours about PBL, assessment, etc. and his words are so interesting that all the listeners didn't realize that we were about half an hour later on the timing and it was time for lunch. So, now, also thanks to this MOOC, I have my mind a little clearer and I think I can prepare my own rubrics about my projects and group works. I never used check lists, and I have to stop and think about them too...

I had a quick glance to the CO-LAB Assessment Guidelines and I think they are very useful, especially as they give many examples and many advices. Thanks for sharing!

Like other Italian teachers, I've started to write and use rubrics last year, after listening to professor Enzo Zecchi's lessons about PBL (project based learning) and the assessment of students' competences. According to the project I was developing with my class (entitled “A journey to the Solar System”) , I've prepared rubrics to evaluate both the individual and the collective outcomes. As for me, the most difficult aspect has been to find simple and well defined criteria and to write clear and brief definitions of each level of progress. My rubrics were very (too) detailed. This probably happened because I was thinking to the rubrics as an useful tool to collect data for the “competences certification” (a document we have to fill in at the end of the middle school), and not as a tool that could help students in their learning process.

When we have to construct a rubric in the language department, it takes a lot of time, but most of the time is spent in calculations ( ! ). I have used also ckecklist once and it has proved a valid method for assessing a task. I have never thought of involving students in the process of rubric making, so I wiill take this tips into account.
Of course the rubrics we generally use are to assess the competence and not the learning process, so much work has to be done to understand what assessment at school really means

I think it is important to work with students in deciding on what rubrics to use. Can use a programme like Rubistar to construct them. It is very important that you begin with a very clear knowledge of what it is you want to assess? Have very clear learning outcomes for the work beginning with an action verb as this will help in developing your rubric. Use language that students can understand. Give examples where possible.

Generally these have been used to help assess individual extended research projects and serve as checklist for pupils and as an assessment tool. They follow a similar format suggested to the ones in the video. They focus on the skills required for the task rather than being very task specific and they have yielded impressive results on all levels of assessment. The advice given here is of superb value. I am so impressed with the value of the rubric that I intend to encourage my entire team to develop a rubric for the continued assessment of writing and reading throughout the Primary and Infant section

(My learning diary:
https://padlet.com/vmnf/t15kcywjqs93 )
Most collaborative work I've done with students is on group projects and out of school STEM projects. On those projects due to lack of experience I've never used a true collaborative work assessment artifacts. My assessment was usually based on group achieving end goals and their final presentation results. Thus I just used a small part of what collaborative work assessment should be, but now I know more on how to implement and how to use to evaluate the full process.
I've used mostly checklists to see if final products reach a set of initial requirements.
Those checklists usually have students as stakeholders since this will improve their acceptance and knowledge of what is requested from them on end.
With checklists students try to match as much items as possible since they know the more they check higher will be their grade. This way students know exactly what is required from them and can set their own objectives.
The tips, guidelines and examples will be very useful to enhance my collaborative activities assessment. Examples are easily usable and give a lot of ideas on how to build my own.

At my school, I have not yet begun to implement collaborative learning activities, because first I have to understand exactly how to apply and evaluate. So my experience with the use of headings and checklists has not started yet. With regard to the involvement of students in the design of the rubrics and checklists used in the evaluation of their work, I now believe, thanks to this course, that it is a critical step to improve their involvement and receptivity in collaborative activities. The tips provided in the video for the construction of rubrics and checklists are, of course, very useful, as well as the guidelines contained in the CO-LAB Evaluation Guidelines.

Google Translator

I haven't created rubrics on my own so far because I was using existing ones, but of course I was adding or omitting some parts to these rubrics according to the objectives of the work. After the video I have realized that it is not as difficult as I have thought. I think involving students in the design of rubrics is a brilliant idea, as they will realize more about the importance of the project they will carry out and also they will be more careful about what they should do or shouldn’t during the process. As for the tips about constructing a rubric I have learned these;
An assessment model could be based around:
(a) Individual and collective learning outcomes; (b) Teamwork and group goals including individual commitment;
(c) The methodological process adopted to implement and complete the project or task;
(d) The product or;
(e) A mix of targets.
If we want to make an assessment at the end of a class, the assessment tool will have to be simple and not take too long to implement. A complex tool could provide us with biased data or hasty information. A checklist in this case could be adequate, but a written reflection would probably be of little use. If our goal is to provide information to the learners about their progress, we need instruments to collect information that we can display in the shape of scales, trend lines or graphics. When the purpose of the assessment is to provide further information to the teacher for example, using infographics, mind maps, portfolios, blogs or multimedia presentations can be appropriate options. Any of these assessment methods can use digital media tools, although this is not necessary. If using digital media, statistical analysis and content analysis tools can be useful. In other cases, rubrics can be used to assess specific items or learning outcomes.
