Sticky notes are encouraged so that we can quickly jot down any ideas, questions, or concerns we might have throughout each day.

Inside the classroom there will be a suggestion box for students to place notes in if they wish to be kept anonymous. At the end of each day the teacher will go through the box. Notes can be about:

New facts they learned that day.

If they need more help understanding a lesson from that day.

What the teacher can do in the classroom in order to help them succeed.

Then we can come together and discuss them as we self-reflect by asking the following additional questions regarding specific activities:

Were all the children actively engaged?

Did it seem developmentally appropriate and what modification were made to help children achieve the goal?

What verbal prompts can I use next time to help guide children’s actions?

To prepare the environment for students we plan to have the childrens desks arranged in groups of 4 to 5 students. We will have an area with a rug that is designated for our morning meetings. Also, we will have keys rules posted were the students can see them in addition to the students coming up with rules to follow themselve, which will increase accountability. Each child will have a cubby to place their personal belongings in as well. School supplies will be in designated areas and clearly labeld with a picture as well to help guide childrens actions. To help with transitions we will have the daily schedule posted on the board and use a timer to help prepare students for the next activity. Children are allowed to discuss among themselves when we are conducting group work, therefore the classroom may be louder than a typically classroom that encourages quiet environment as children work alone. Lastly, the teachers will constantly be on the move as we help guide childrens actions and thinking in order to accomplish the task at hand.

Rationale for Activity Ideas

We were able to generate ideas for our curriculum project theme by creating a planning web that helped us think of different concepts related to construction. The most helpful part was breaking the concept into subcategories that made it easier to come up with potential activities. The majority of the ideas came from our own experiences working with young children. Also, for items such as creating concrete steppingstone we used an online resource for guidance (Lord, 2011). Each activity is developmentally appropriate as they are tailored specifically for second grade students. Activities include simplification and extensions so that it is modifed to the strengths and needs of the students.

This will help us know what standards our students are meeting in addition to our daily objectives.
Classroom Assessment: We will be using the Class Assessment Scoring System (CLASS; Pianta et. al, 2008) manual to help guide our teaching strategies. We will take turns observing each other once a month to determine what areas we may be lacking. This will enable us to become more aware of our weaknesses and discuss how we may improve by implementing certain strategies.
