William was a physician as well as a snake oil salesman. He went through one Business class before dropping out of school, but then would make his own company dealing with commodities. Sensing the potential of oil in Western Pennsylvania, he would purchase land and make his own refinery near Cleveland(1863). By 1872 it would beat out all of its competitors in Cleveland and would control all of Cleveland refineries. Using this control, they would acquire railroads and pipelines to move their oil. By 1882, Standard Oil would have near control of all oil in the USA.  It would produce 90% of oil refining in the USA. This act was made to combat monopolies, of which, Standard Oil is affected. Standard Oil was declared a monopoly that violated Ohio laws. To evade this, Rockefeller dissolved the company and transferred to other properties from other companies in other states. These companies merged back into Standard Oil, but now it is in New Jersey. Additionally, Rockefeller also donated money to various universities, including the University of Chicago, which he helped establish, and Spelman College, a historically black women's college.
