Though it is aluminum, it still has weight, and you have to propel multiple hovercrafts into space just to help with/deflect a small amount of the uv rays and heating from the sun. And at some point, we would lose enough heat that could possibly cool the earth to an extent. It would have to be refueled, and possibly fixed if something hits it, such as debris. Soft metal would not be a good idea, since softer metals, such as gallium, melt very easily. And, the high temperatures required to enter the upper atmosphere would melt it easily. You could attach it to a weather balloon, since those can enter the atmosphere easily, and go to the edge of space even.
