- Stress can cause physical symptoms on people; usually they go through three stages when experiencing stress. In the first phase your body gets into fight or flight mode so there are many physical changes that occur such as tunnel vision, heart acceleration, shortness of breath, tense muscles, etc. In phase two, people try to create resistance to this stressor in some way, which leads us to phase three, which is exhaustion. The human body becomes exhausted from too much stress.
- There are other ways people respond to stress such as withdrawing, pulling back, conserving energy, becoming paralyzed, or resorting to the tend and befriend response.
- Stress can affect both mental and physical health.

How does personality affect stress and ultimately your health

People who feel like they are in control of their life have lower stress levels than those who feel like htey cannot control it. Depression can also affect how a person feels towards the amount of control in their life, which leads to more or less stress. There are people with internal locus control and thos with external locus control. Those with internal locus control believe they control their own destiny and those with external locus control believe that their surroundings control their own destiny. People with self control are also thought to be more successful in life and have lower stress. Optimists usually have a better life outcome compared to pessimists, but you usually need a balance between the two. If you are too optimistic you may have higher expectations, and can often feel let down when things don't turn out how they expect them to.

Pessimist people often expect people and things to disappoint them. People with depression often have a more negative view of the world and have trouble taking in the positive. This affects stress levels in many ways. Depressed people tend to be less productive, therefore stress can build up when they don't get stuff done. The feeling that everything is going to take a turn for the worse can also cause feelings of stress. Higher stress can affect your immune system and worsen mental health, specially when people do not know how to deal with it.
