Arnold had begun secret negotiations with the British to surrender the American fort at West Point, New York, in return for money and a command in the British army. He did this because after the battle of Saratoga he believed that he would get a promotion to General. On February 19, 1777 Arnold got the news that he would not be getting promoted. This made Arnold so mad that he became a spy for the British.
