Surprisingly, ever since the permit of white rhino trophy hunting in 1968, the population of white rhinos have significantly increased from 1,800 to 18,000 in 2018. Datas shows that the population of black rhinos have also increased from 3,500 in 2004 to 5,500 in 2018. Today, approximately 50% of rhinos are privately owned and well kept. Though compared to the 1960s, 97.6% of Black Rhinos are down and only less than 4% are left living.

There is another form of rhino hunting called Poaching, which is trophy hunting but illegal, without permission or license. The Rhino Poaching crisis has been going on ever since 2008 and still remains uncontrollable. Fortunately, the number of rhinos poached has decreased significantly compared to 2015 when they reached a record number of rhinos killed. Rhino poaching comes as their horns are precious and worth a lot of money, these horns are sold and traded on the black market.

Trophy hunting actually benefiting conservation of rhinos

According to researches and interview, a whopping 86% of all hunters say that they prefer hunting in areas where they know that part of the income earned would be sent to locals communities or used for maintaining the habitat not only for rhinos but also other animals, both endangered and not. Hunters also say that they are willing to pay a higher price for a less worthy trophy if it meant helping the communities with that money or if the trophy came from a problem animal that needed to be killed anyway.

In my opinion, despite there are many benefits to rhino hunting, such as that it can actually help with the species' conservation, I still believe that trophy hunting in general should be banned. For things such as maintaining habitats, I think it could be dealt with if the government carry out measures to invest in it from other industries rather than from killing the rhinos themselves. Furthermore, since the use of Rhino horns or other valuable parts are banned worldwide, there is no point of hunting and killing rhinos, not changing the policy would just create a loophole for illegal hunters to make use of rhino horns on the black market. But most importantly, like dogs and other domestic animals, I want to see a lot of rhinos around!
