Period 8/9 R&J 4.1-4.2 R&J Subtext, Stress, and Inflection by Franziska Federico

Directions: Given your knowledge of the characters and recent events, examine the dialogue of Friar Lawrence, Paris, or Capulet in 4.1-4.2 and determine the subtext vs. surface meaning as well as the manner in which the lines would be read. On padlet, you will need to post: 2 Quotes, Subtext (What is that character thinking based on these lines?), Inflection (How would they be read?), Connection (Is the subtext parallel to the spoken words?).

My lord, we must entreat the time alone."
Subtext: "Paris you can never marry Juliet she is already married to Romeo. This will not end well. Poor Juliet."
Inflection: Serious, mocking tone
Connection: The subtext is parallel to the spoken words because he is saying everything that he is thinking, just indirectly.

I do spy a kind of hope,

Which craves as desperate an execution

As that is desperate which we would prevent.

If, rather than to marry County Paris,

Thou hast the strength of will to slay thyself,

Then is it likely thou wilt undertake

A thing like death to chide away this shame,

That copest with death himself to ’scape from it.

An if thou darest, I’ll give thee remedy".

Subtext: Friar is trying to give Juliet advice to be free of the forceful marriage and the torture coming with it. With a vial, Juliet would seem as if she is dead for a decent amount of time so she can be reunited with her true love. He is worried about Juliet, and thinks that she can escape her torture.
Inflection: sincere, helpful, worried
Connection: The subtext is parallel to the spoken words because Friar is offering a situation where Juliet should not be scared, that will reunite the two lovers.

"Do not deny to him that you love me."
Subtext: Juliet really loves me and is into me. She would not deny this to Friar Laurence
Inflection: Paris would emphasize the word "him " and the phrase "you love me" and would say "him" in a hinting manner and "you love me" in a soft tone.
Connection: When Paris is speaking to Juliet in this scene, he is referring to Friar Laurence by using the word "him". While Juliet is referring to Romeo, Paris believes that they are speaking about their marriage, their love for each other, and confessing to Friar Laurence of their love for one another. Paris is telling Juliet to not deny her love for him, Paris.

"Immoderately she weeps for Tybalt's death, And therefore have I little talk'd of love;..."
Subtext: Juliet is crying over Tybalt so we have no time to speak of our love for each other.
Inflection: Paris would say that Juliet is weeping in a soft, sad tone and would speak of their lack of speaking about their love in a disappointed, but understanding tone.

Connection: When Paris speaking to Friar Laurence, he is explaining the relationship between the two of them. Paris is saying that due to Tybalt's death, Juliet is crying and her feeling shave come in the way of their love and marriage.
