My Reflection About Connected but Alone Ted Talk By Sherry Turkle

“That feeling when no one is listening is very important with technology that is why it is so appealing to have a social media accounts”, Sherry Turkle said. And yes, I admit it, that I myself rely to my social media accounts especially on twitter where I post my problems, opinions and other ideas. But have we ever asked ourselves, how technology eats us by those social media accounts where we rely?
Admit it or not people nowadays have forgotten the lives without technology for communication. As Turkle said, “Technology is making a bid to redefine human connection, how we care for each other, how we care for ourselves, but it’s also giving us the opportunity to affirm our values and our direction”, “We spend an evening on the social network instead of going to the pub with friends”. As a matter of fact, the generation today prefer to use technology by those social networks rather than talking to their family and friends. We we’re lost by those social networks, we cannot picture our lives without technology which provides us more to communicate with others. Yes, technology makes our communication better especially when we are far away from our friends and families. Yes, it’s easier for us to bring out what we feel and tell anyone how we feel about them by those technology. But have we ever realized that coming from us in person about how we feel or what we want to say is much better than using technology? It is more appreciated if we talk in person rather than we talk on social networks using technology. We missed to experience the real feeling and view of people around us when we hide behind online communication. Have someone texted you or emailed you the word “I love you”? Where we smile a lot and makes our heart beat skip? But have you ever think if that was really true and serious? That’s my point, that connection in real life situation without technology is more important and appreciated.
I was hit by the ted talk of Sherry Turkle because I cannot deny the fact that I was also in the generation where technology is more important than other things. I feel the guilt about how we spend time to technology rather than fixing ourselves and spending more time to families and friends or to studies and other important things in life.
Let’s start asking ourselves if technology really does provide the connection we need. We know that it gives us many positive effects that we cannot deny. What we should do now is that, let us use technology in a way that we can develop or progress not to develop in a wrong way or direction.
