Gender inequality within the healthcare system is when a women does not receive the same medical treatment as men or are not taken as seriously. According to Thomas Jefferson University gender inequality “In healthcare, refers to situations where patients are assessed, diagnosed and treated differently and at a lower quality level because of their gender than others with the same complaints.” The treatment women receive are less likely to be taken seriously, have their pain treated, or "Women are less likely to have their pain treated, or their symptoms taken seriously or to be given diagnosis than men"

According to Arturo Garcia, in an article from snopes.com, they provided the story about a women in NYC that was seeking to get a tubal ligation (tubes tied) and had to fight to get one despite being married to a man who also did not want children, and worked in entertainment and law; two career paths that were not kid friendly. A doctor told her that they were going to "Talk [her] out of it." She later found a specialist in Manhattan to perform the surgery. Also from Arturo Garcia, in other states such as Ohio, Oregon, Connecticut, Georgia, Missouri, and Mississippi do not cover tubal ligation performed post-partum in their family planning programs. Whereas in those same states vasectomies are covered.

There are many different organizations who make it their responsibility to try and provide equal and decent healthcare for women all around the world, especially in the United States. For example of a globally supportive organization is the United Nations Women, who make it their goal to advocate and fight "violence against women and girls harms [to] their health, including their sexual, reproductive and mental health"(UN Women). Their group also tries to support and empower women who are living with HIV and AIDS and ensure to give them the best resources available to deal with those diseases. Another organizations whose efforts go out to ensure the best and easiest access to women is the Center for Reproductive Right, who doesn't just focus on a women's right to or to not have children. As said from GuideStar.org, the organization through their "litigation and state level advocacy, the Center works to ensure minors’ access to reproductive healthcare" specially for emergency contraceptive, and even abortion to the youth of the country who will not have to deal with being ridiculed or belittled because of their choices based off of their age or sex, which has been reported all throughout the United States, especially in the south.

Methods and progress related to combating the injustice:

The first step to start putting an end to gender inequality, especially within the healthcare system, is to "[acknowledge] and [research] the gender bias in healthcare"(Thomas Jefferson University, September 4, 2019). When there is the recognition of the problem, here being the gender bias, more people who are concerned with the problem, like patients, are aware that the bias does exist. Currently and in the future, more research is being conducted with more women; making sure that women are able to be correctly represented in medical research to alleviate the bias.

Possible Next Steps

As of right now, there are small steps being taken to address the situation, but they are steps in the right direction. Especially with the uprising of the #MeToo movement, Dr. Maya Dusenbery has been feeling “more optimistic about the power of women’s stories to help spur some real change”(Jenara Nerenberg, March 09, 2018). The current injustice should also be directed to getting the attention from the healthcare workers themselves why are typically the ones "establishing" the inequality firsthand. A possible step to alleviate the problem would be to try to have as accurate and updated medical research, keeping the learnt material as accurate as possible. That means the possibility of conducting more research tailored to how women react to certain medical treatment, that was only originally proved with men.

Action/inaction currently happening in regards to the injustice:

One of the actions that is taking place in regards to the injustice taking place is creating a more diverse culture of inclusion, having the necessary resources and amenities available not just for women, but for all underrepresented minorities in the healthcare system. In an article, Stanford-trained surgeon Arghavan Salles, MD, PhD said in an interview that in addition to hiring and including even more women, underrepresented minorities and transgender and non-binary gender people to bring in new ideas and insight, "diversity without inclusion is essentially exclusion.”(Jennifer Huber, March 09, 2020). So currently, more and more healthcare systems, like at Stanford, are taking the time to be able to provide that type of inclusion to eliminate the gender bias to help provide the best medical care they can. But still as of right now, women can still be denied certain medical procedures or forms of birth control, such as hysterectomies and other forms of contraceptives because the doctor administering the procedure doesn't believe in the reasons that they are requesting the treatment. If you were a women wanting to receive a hysterectomy, you would need to; be of a certain age, typically 35, already have at least one child prior, and even possibly have your *husbands* or spouses consent to proceed with the procedure. Where as a man can walk in without any of those requirements, and receive a vasectomy, no questions asked, because of how it is reversible
